KATHYRN KRONICLE

January 2019
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Welcome to 2019! We hope that everyone had a wonderful break surrounded by family and friends.  While I am writing this the weather is currently 10 degrees and beautiful outside and yet the long term forecast has a high of minus 12 and a low of minus 16 in the next few days, ahh weather in Alberta.

While January always brings feelings of a new start as the year begins we would be remiss to not reflect on the last portion of 2018.  December is alway a busy month at a school and at Kathyrn we like to ramp it even more!!  We started the month with Kidstrong which brought in over 10 presenters to give workshops on healthy activities that students can participate in to help to develop resilience and also have a whole lot of fun.  We then moved onto our annual food drive and thanks to this amazing community we were able to donate to the Irricana Food Bank over 1200 items to support the hard working families and individuals that reside in and around Kathyrn. We ended this year with our winter concert where once again all of our students had a chance to showcase their creative abilities.  Of course while all of this was going on we continued to strive to provide a strong and comprehensive academic program that enables our students to face both today's challenges while also preparing them for the future.

Later this month we will reach the halfway mark of the 2018/19 school year, wow times does go fast.  With that in mind registration for all students that will be new to Kathyrn for the 2019/20 school year will begin on January 14th and continue for the rest of the school year.  New students, including next years Kindergarten class, are encouraged to register early as it helps the school to better be able to plan.

As always if you have any concerns or questions about what is happening at Kathyrn we encourage you to contact us.  Schools are always most effective when they have a close link with their community.

We hope that you have a great January!!

Dave

JUNIOR B VOLLEYBALL
Congrats to our Girls Junior B volleyball team for 2018!  Astrid Tattersall, Sindal Baptist, Kaitlyn McCardle, Grace Meyer, McKenna Adams, Tyra Willie, Peyton Papp, Georgia Cowan, Stephanie Putland, Reanne Ziegman, Jessie Thiessen, Alexia Eagleson, and Mia Zezulka.  The girls worked really hard and had a great time this season!    We were very successful with only one loss in all three tournaments.  Good luck to all the grade 8 girls who are moving onto different schools and different teams next year and looking forward to another great year with those who are returning and coming aboard!

KODIAKS BASKETBALL
With the volleyball season wrapped up and the holidays behind us we are now into Basketball season for our Grade 6, 7 and 8 students.  First up is Grade 6 Basketball which will start practices in the middle of January and have their tournament on Friday, February 8th.  Our Junior B teams will then begin practices in February in preparation for their three tournaments in March.  If you have any questions about the upcoming basketball season please speak to Mrs. Jeske for the girls and Mr. Banderk for the boys.
SNAP SHOTS AT KATHYRN
Grade 3 and 5 students working together to make Peruvian bracelets.
In late November Kathyrn School held Kidstrong, an event that has presenters from various different disciplines come and work with students about healthy ways of living.  This year we had dancing, art, nutrition, yoga, obstacle courses and singing to name just a few. A huge thank you to our presenters, and organizing staff that spent hours putting the day together.
Kathyrn School loves Fridays because that is when "Charley the Service Dog" drops in for the day.
Testing buoyancy with boats built from tin foil and cardboard.
Student vs Staff Volleyball game and Family challenges provided for a fun Friday afternoon...even though the students won the Volleyball game.  We will get them back during basketball!!
Chestermere High School band dropped by to showcase some of their holiday music.
Good times were had at this year's Country Christmas event.
Another Christmas Concert in the books.  Thank you to students, families and staff for a great event.
Literacy lives here. We see it as we talk about numbers, learn the days of the week, check the gym plan, talk about our art, find cozy places to read and make "to be read" lists.
UPDATE FROM GRADE 1
We have been very fortunate to have Miss Dumont, a student teacher, from St. Mary's college with us for most of the fall.  She has been teaching us all about adding and subtracting as well as needs of plants and animals in science.  We wish her all the best in her journeys as an educator.  We will miss you!!
UPDATE FROM GRADE 4
Grade 4 have been busy making travel commercials for Alberta’s different geographic regions. You can scan one of the following QR codes  to watch – and maybe help you make a travel plan!
We’ve also been busy in math with Which One Doesn’t Belong. We take a look at four images and decide which one we think doesn’t belong. The best part? There is not only one answer, we just need to explain our thinking! Take a look at our New Year’s selection, which one do you think doesn’t belong?
SCHOOL COUNCIL
Our next School Council meeting will be held on Wednesday January 16th at 7:00 pm. in the Kathyrn Learning Commons.  School Council plays a vital role in supporting the education of all our students and gives you an opportunity to have input into the School Education Plan, provide feedback on issues such as budget priorities, mission and vision.  We encourage all of you to be there to help to ensure that Kathryn is the best it can be.
ALBERTA EDUCATION STAKEHOLDER SATISFACTION SURVEY
As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success.

The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators. Data on these indicators consists of surveys completed by students, parents and teachers on various aspects of education quality, student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates, and provincial assessments of student learning.

From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey.
  • In January, parents of students in grades 4-12 will receive a survey from Alberta Education.
  • In February, students in grades 4-12 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school.
All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with your school.  In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Dene, Cree, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu.

Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.

Survey results will be available to school authorities in May, and will be reported publicly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.
