We know everybody is talking about turkeys this month, but chickens are still #1 in our backyard and life. Even in their molty stages, we still love 'em. That's why we've put together a number of tips to help you and your chickens have a great holiday season.
3 Pre-Holiday Chicken Keeping Tips
1) Molting - Also known as feather loss and regrowth is likely the reason why your coop may look like a feather factory. Molting happens every Fall and may create a decrease in egg production. Molting may take anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks depending on age and diet, but soon after your chickens will be flaunting their new tail feathers.
2) Protein Increase - Growing new feathers is a load of work! Just like a new workout regimen, your flock will need an increased protein-rich diet. After all, feathers are made up of 80-85% protein!
3) Daylight Savings Time - Chickens are like plants....sorta! Their egg production benefits from sunlight. Once less than 12 hours of daylight is available, egg production slows down and sometimes even stops temporarily.
Pssst...now with the holiday season approaching...it's a great time to help fulfill some backyard farming goals before the new year. For a limited time, if you order today your coop or greenhouse will arrive just in time for gifting, whether to yourself or an aspiring backyard farmer you know!
