E-News from GUMC

Pastor's Note

I can't believe August is here already. Before we know it school will be in full swing and we will be talking about Christmas. But, before that happens we have lots of activity going on at the church. We have some amazing changes going on with our children and youth program that I believe will better serve our families and the families yet to join us. You can read more about those later in the newsletter.

I feel that we are in a place in the life of our congregation that we will be living out our vision statement more fully each day. Our official vision statement we approved earlier this year is: "Goodland UMC exists To Help People of All Ages: Gather to worship God, Grow in faith, hope, and love, and Go engage and serve our community."

Unfortunately with change of any kind comes anxiety. The bigger the change, the larger the anxiety. We will see unfamiliar faces in worship and at events. People will act differently than those who've been members of this church for over 50 years. These are all healthy things and show that we will be growing God's kingdom. Sometimes the changes can bother us so much, we begin to get negative and not show our best sides within the church and in the community. It happens, and no church is immune to it.

If you find yourself getting anxious, and yes, maybe even angry or frustrated, take a moment to reflect on what it is that is bothering you and try to find the cause. Take some time to read "A Modern Parable" on the side of this note and see if it brings any insight into your anxiety. Then ask yourself "Where is my focus?" As I said in a recent sermon, we often get tied up in the "How?" of doing something and forget the "Why?" we are doing it in the first place. The "Why?" is always more important, to reach people for Christ. The growth of God's Kingdom is our purpose for existing as a church and congregation. Let that be our guide into the future and ground us in our actions.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Zach

A Modern Parable

“A lady went to her Pastor and said ‘Pastor, I won’t be going to your church anymore.’

The Pastor responded ‘But why?’

The lady said ‘Ah! I saw a woman gossiping about another member; a man that is a hypocrite; the worship team living wrong; people looking at their phone during service; among so many other things wrong in your church.’

The Pastor replied ‘OK. But before you go, do me a favor: take a full glass of water and walk around the church three times without spilling a drop on the ground. Afterwards, leave the church if you desire.’
The lady thought: too easy! She walked three times around the church as the Pastor had asked. When she finished she told the Pastor she was ready to leave.

The lady replied ‘No.’

‘Did you see any hypocrites?’
The lady said ‘No.’

‘Anyone looking at their phone?’

‘You know why?’

‘You were focused on the glass, to make sure you didn’t stumble and spill any water. It’s the same with our life. When we keep our eyes on Jesus, we don’t have time to see the mistakes of others. We will reach out a helping hand to them and concentrate on our own walk with the Lord.'”

New Members to Join on August 19th
We will be welcoming new members to full membership at Goodland UMC on August 19th during worship. There will also be multiple baptisms during this service. It is not too late to be apart of this group. Are you interested in joining Goodland UMC? Wondering what being a member is about? Would you and/or your children like to be baptized? If any of these questions apply to you, please contact Pastor Zach (
Changes to Children's Program Coming

Starting this fall, you will see some changes to our programs realted to children. For many years, our main children's education program was Wednesday Nite Live(WNL). Starting on August 26th, we will be moving our main program to Sunday mornings. KidZone will be the new name of the program and will take place during worship on Sundays. The program will include children ranging from 4-years-old to 6th grade.

Children will attend worship with their families until after Young Disciples Time at which time they will split into two groups. 4-year-olds through 2nd grade will go upstairs for time lead by Lori Long, and 3rd through 6th grade will go downstairs with Pastor Caleb. Both groups will include age appropriate activities, Bible learning, and fun activities.

More details will be out in the coming weeks.
