Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention This CDC recognized, evidence-based program is being researched for its ability to relieve joint pain with results showing reductions in the rate of falls.  Learn more about the program and a simple move/form that is a major player in all of the Tai Chi for Health forms.

Prevention Begins with Fall Risk Factors Assessment Join Dr. Julia Castleberry who will emphasize the importance of identifying fall risk factors. Learn how medications, vitals, movement, as well as arthritis, strength, and speed impact an individual's risk for falls.  This presentation also brings to light the fall risk factors of low vision, fear of falling, obesity, and obstructive sleep apnea.

Walk With Ease with Mona Burwell, Arthritis Program Coordinator with the Virginia Department of Health. She will provide techniques on how to build and maintain a successful walking program. Using the Arthritis Foundation Enhance Self-Directed Walk With Ease program (WWE) platform, this CDC, evidence-based arthritis approved walking program has been effective in increasing balance, reducing pain, and improving mental health, flexibility, and overall physical health.

Topics will include Universal Design, indoor air quality, energy efficiency, solar power, home modifications, technology, and typical challenges in homes that prevent safe Aging in Place.

Regional Training Office (RTO) Update

The Regional Training Office has canceled all upcoming SAIL and AMOB leader trainings and updates due to COVID-19. These trainings will be rescheduled for a later date. As soon as these dates are confirmed, we will send out an update.

Virginias Govenor's Conference on Aging: NEW DATES
When: May 17-18, 2021, Richmond, VA
The conference has been moved to 2021! The conference, “Connect. Collaborate. Contribute: Communities for the Future” will provide the opportunity for participants to take an active role in making Virginia a better place to live for our aging population. The two day conference will include breakout sessions in three focus areas and keynote speakers that will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. The conference will yield recommendations to current and future policy makers on measures to be taken to make Virginia one of the most livable states for all ages.  Visit for details.

INOVA's Online Fitness Classess
In an effort to keep the community active and connected during the COVID-19 crisis, InovaWell’s Healthy Lifestyle program continues to offer a series of Virtual Fitness classes, available Monday – Friday at 11:00 a.m. All classes can be done from the comfort of home and will require little to no equipment. Exercise modifications are included.

NVFPA FREE Virtual SAIL Class 
The NVFPA will offer a FREE VIRTUAL SAIL session starting Monday, Sept. 28th. The class will be offered using Zoom on Mondays and Thursdays, 1 - 2 p.m. More information, including how to register, will be available on our website by Monday, Sept. 21st.

Free Falls Prevention Lectures

Virtual SAIL Classes
We LOVE to brag about our Alliance members! A partnership between ServiceSource Inc. and Fairfax County Neighborhood Community Services has created a Virtual Center for Active Adults.  They offer a variety of fun activities such as games, discussion groups, trivia, exercise classes (including SAIL), caregiver focused discussion groups and much more!
     The goal of the Virtual Center for Active Adults is to enrich the lives of adults in Fairfax County while combatting isolation. Participants can connect with peers, engage in a variety of activities, and discover useful resources. The Center offers live, interactive programs with opportunities to engage with other adults. All programs have a live facilitator, many of whom are recreation therapists that design and implement adaptations and modifications needed to support participants during the virtual activities.  Programs can be watched live or on demand.  For more information about activities and resources, please visit their website:
