2019 Xenia Job Fair

The 2019 Xenia Job Fair is coming soon! The job fair will be held at the Xenia High School Gymnasium, 303 Kinsey Road, Xenia, OH 45385 on Wednesday, March 13th from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. The event is FREE to the public. Veterans are welcome and everyone is encouraged to bring an up-to-date resume.

The City of Xenia has partnered with OhioMeansJobs Greene County to host the job fair since 2015 to give local businesses an opportunity to connect with local job seekers and hire qualified individuals to fill open positions. This year the City will partner again with Xenia Community Schools and add a component to help Xenia high school seniors learn how to interview for jobs, discover the range of occupations they can pursue, and seek additional training they may need to get available jobs or start on a particular career path. The first part of the job fair from 1:00 – 2:00 pm (noted on the flyer) is set for high school seniors only with the event opening to the general public at 2 pm.

City of Xenia’s Development Director Steve Brodsky said, “The Xenia Job and Training Fair will help local job seekers not only find jobs, but hopefully career paths. By including training partners, we hope to demonstrate that with some additional training, often short-term training, better jobs and careers could be available."  His advice to the job seekers attending the job fair is to come prepared! Brodsky added, “Where appropriate, job seekers should have several copies of their up to date resumes and be sure to dress in a professional manner. First impressions make a difference."

Staff Development and Why It's Important

The City of Xenia observes President’s Day (February) and Columbus Day (October) a little differently than most municipalities. While most cities take those days off to observe the two holidays, the City of Xenia uses them as Staff Development and Training Days. We close our offices and to allow employees to participate in different seminars, presentations, and activities to gain important development and training knowledge.

Staff training and development isn’t just important to any organization- it is vital. Employee development activities help in the growth and development of employees, who are the true assets of an organization. Xenia City Manager Brent Merriman says that “the City’s employees are the advocates of the city and should know first-hand what the city’s goals are to better help our residents.”

Employee development is important for employees to enhance their skills and upgrade their existing knowledge in order to perform better. These development and training programs allow employees the resources to strengthen weak skills they may have, which in turn reduces weak links within the organization. It’s important not only for professional but also personal growth of employees. The development activities can prepare individuals for adverse conditions and unforeseen situations. Acquiring new skills and learning is a part of every job. A sense of pride develops when employees feel that their organization is investing time and resources to train and develop their skills. These activities may also build confidence within the employees because they have a stronger understanding of the industry and the responsibilities of their jobs. Employee development is essential for extracting the best out of employees.

Employee development creates a learning culture in the organization where every employee is motivated to learn new skills and improve existing skills. In a world that is always advancing, employers want employees to be up to date and have continuous training and development to keep up with the advances in society. Structured training and development programs ensure that employees have a consistent experience and background knowledge. Employees who receive the necessary training and development is better able to perform at their job and they become more aware of safety practices and proper procedures for basic tasks. All employees need to be aware of the expectations and procedures within the organization, and consistency is particularly relevant for the organization’s basic policies and procedures including safety and administrative tasks. Putting all employees through regular training in these areas ensures that all staff members at least have exposure to the information.

Overall, development and training days benefit everyone involved, but most importantly, they benefit YOU, the citizen. Staff who are trained and undergoing continuous development will be able to better serve you. The City of Xenia will continue to find ways to improve our employees' skills to better serve you and the Xenia community.

City of Xenia Income Taxes

Taxes are due Monday, April 15, 2019

Who Must File

  • All Xenia residents and partial year residents ages 18 and over (including zero income)
  • Xenia residents 16 and 17 years of age only if their tax is not completely withheld for Xenia at the rate of 2.25%
  • Retired residents age 65 and over if they have rental, business income or earned income
  • Every business entity that conducts business within or for the City of Xenia. This includes ownership of rental property within the City of Xenia

When to File

The due date for taxpayers who end their taxable year on December 31 is April 15 (or the due date for the State of Ohio returns) of the following year. Late filing of a return, whether tax is due or not, subjects the taxpayer to penalty and/or interest. Forms to request an extension to file a Xenia City return are available here or in the Xenia Income Tax Division office. This is an extension to file, not an extension to pay. Xenia extension to file requests must be received by the tax return due date to be honored. A copy of the timely filed Xenia extension or Federal extension must be attached to your return when filed to avoid late filing penalties.

NOTE: Beginning with tax year 2016, if you have a timely filed Federal extension to file, you are not required to provide it in advance of filing your tax return but you must attach a copy of the Federal extension to your return when filed to avoid late filing penalties.

Estimated Tax Payments for Tax Year 2018 & Beyond

If a taxpayer has income that will be subject to Xenia income tax, but the tax is not being withheld for the taxpayer by an employer, the taxpayer is responsible for making estimated payments on the tax liability. To avoid penalty and interest, the taxpayer must pay either 90% of the income tax liability (as shown on the final return) or 100% of the previous year's tax by January 15 (following the tax year). The Income Tax office will be glad to assist taxpayers in calculating what estimated payments should be made to avoid penalty and interest. Since the tax rate effective January 1, 2011 is 2.25% and the maximum credit for taxes paid to other cities is 1.5%, if you work outside the City of Xenia, in most cases, you must make estimated payments to avoid a penalty. The quarterly estimated payments for calendar filers are due as follows to avoid a penalty:
  • 22 1/2% of Xenia tax liability (minus any credits) on or before April 15
  • 45% of Xenia tax liability (minus any credits) on or before June 15
  • 67 1/2% of Xenia tax liability (minus any credits) on or before September 15
  • 90% of Xenia tax liability (minus any credits) on or before January 15

Tax Preparation

The tax office is available to prepare City income tax returns at no charge in person during the hours of 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday (holidays excluded). To prepare a city income tax return, the taxpayer must provide all W-2s, 1099s, and their Federal Income Tax Return with all attachments. If taxes have been paid to other cities, W-2s or other documentation showing the cities receiving the withholding payments must be provided to receive credit.
