Spring 2019 Semi-Annual Hydrant Flushing

The City of Xenia maintenance crews will flush City fire hydrants beginning Monday, May 6th in order to test the hydrants and clean the water mains. Hydrant flushing is typically done in May and October to avoid any inclement weather conditions and is intended to further keep citizens safe in case of fire emergencies.

The city-wide flushing has been scheduled the entire week of May 6, 2019. Flushing hours are 8:00 am until 3:00 pm daily.

During the week, residents should not be alarmed, but may notice discolored water, low water pressure and hydrants flowing for long periods of time. The water is safe to drink, however, it is suggested that ALL residents check their water before attempting to draw water, or to do laundry. Residents should be aware that when hydrants are flushed in one area of the City, water could also become discolored in other areas.

For residents with water softeners, it is suggested the unit not be cycled at night unless the water has been checked. In addition, the softener can be bypassed if the water is discolored for any length of time.

The tentative schedule for flushing is:
Monday | Northwest of West Church Street, North of Market Street and Dayton Avenue and West of North Detroit Street (Beverly Hills, Fairmoor Heights, Timber Ridge, North Galloway Areas and Laynewood north of Dayton Avenue)
Tuesday | West of State Route 35 and Northwest of Bellbrook Avenue (The Colorado Sections of Arrowhead, Sterling Green, Childers, Reserve of Xenia and Wright Cycle Estates)
Wednesday | North of East Church Street and East of North Detroit Street including Amlin Heights and Old Springfield Pike. (Kinsey Meadows, Summer Brooke, Stadium Heights, Greene Memorial Hospital)
Thursday | Between Church Street, Market Street, and Dayton Avenue on the North and South of East Third Street along Cincinnati Avenue to Industrial to Bellbrook Avenue and Northeast of State Route US 35. (Including Arrowhead north of US 35, Laynewood on both sides of W. Second Street and the Downtown Area going east to the Corporation Limit)
Friday | South of Third Street and East of Bellbrook Avenue to Industrial Boulevard then East of Cincinnati Avenue. (Including South Hill, Legacy, and Industrial Park)

Easter EGGstravaganza 2019 Recap

On Saturday, April 20th, the Annual Easter EGGstravaganza was held at Shawnee Park. It is put on every year by the City of Xenia Board of Recreation, Arts, and Cultural Activities (BRACA) and the Xenia Area Association of Churches and Ministries.

They have Basket Giveaways, Pictures with the Easter Bunny, and over 10,000 filled Easter Eggs for kids. They have designated areas for different ability/age groups including: Pre-walkers, Walkers thru age 4, Ages 5-8, Ages 9-12, and Designated Special Needs Area.

The event is FREE for everyone and there's always a great turnout, even in the not-so-great "Ohio" weather. We tell the parents, kids, and families to dress for the weather because the event has even happened while it's been snowing. This year's event was a little cloudy, rainy, and chilly but still turned out great.

The Annual Easter EGGstravaganza is normally held the Saturday before Easter, every year.

This year, Xenia's Public Service Department did great things to help prepare for the event, as well as, cleaning up the event. They donated quite a few baskets, and even got recognition from Mayor Mays. The Mayor visited the Public Service guys to thank them in person and said to them: "I was so impressed with your guys’ donations for the Easter Egg Hunt. I’ve never had a group of people chip in like that. I’ve been doing this for a long time and it meant the world to me personally. I was so proud, every time I picked up a basket and it said our (Xenia) public service union workers, I can’t express to you how proud I was. So I wanted to say Thank You". The City of Xenia would also like to give a HUGE Thank You to the Public Service Department for their donations and hard work to prepare for and to clean-up after the event.

Issue 8 Renewal Levy

On May 7, 2019, Xenia voters will be presented with an opportunity to renew an existing operating levy needed for current expenses. This item will appear as Issue 8 on your ballot, and you should be aware of the facts concerning this levy request. Read on to learn more about Issue 8, the implications of the levy renewal, and how proceeds from the levy are used for service in Xenia.

Issue 8 is a request for a RENEWAL of a 3.5 mill operating levy. Because the measure is a levy renewal, there is no tax increase if Issue 8 is approved by voters. This levy was first passed in 1959 and has been subsequently renewed ever since. The tax rate has been held constant since 1978, and the current effective rate is 0.944 mills. The estimated tax revenue generated from this long-standing levy is approximately $450,000 a year. For the owner of a typical $100,000 home in Xenia, the levy costs less than $3.00 per month. Again ... this IS NOT an increase in your taxes, but a renewal of the current tax in place.

Monies generated from the levy are used for the provision of core, critical services in our community, like emergency medical and fire services, 9-1-1/ dispatch, police, municipal court, and parks. The revenue generated by the levy is an extremely important funding source for our core services. If the levy renewal is not passed, City leaders would have to pursue service reduction steps as our budget does not have the positive margin to absorb such a loss in funding.

In the City of Xenia, we take stewardship of your tax dollars very seriously and want to be transparent with how these funds are used in providing services. To help make information about your local government's expenditures transparent, there are several resources available to you. Visit www.eXploreXenia.com and search for Ohio Checkbook to access detailed expenditure history available through the Ohio Treasurer's Office and explore more information on our local government costs and comparisons by searching for Budget & Finance.
