Wisdom for the Writing Warrior

By Linda Bendorf & Elizabeth Sloan

Every piece of good writing, like other things in life, comes at a cost. Some stories are hard to begin; others are hard to tell. Sometimes we have trouble finding our point of entry. What dampens your creativity? You must name whatever holds you back, because what keeps you from writing could also stymie you in other areas of life.

The writing warrior remembers that the struggle, the skirmish, to flounder --  is always part of the story. As writers we often grapple with those little inner gremlins that perch on our shoulder and whisper into our ear, “You’ll never write. You have nothing to say. Who would care to hear your story?”

A quotation attibuted to David Gemmell reminds us: “Do not speak badly of yourself, for the warrior that is inside you hears your words and is lessened by them.”

Poet and scientist, Rachel Carson said, “If you write what you yourself sincerely think and feel and are interested in… you will interest other people.”

Our stories count. Even the most ordinary moments make up the larger fabric of our lives. In retrospect, we more clearly see the significance of everyday events. You DO have something to say. As brave hearts, we must be willing to flounder in word and thought until we tell the story with such clarity that our readers will say, “Ah ha! Your story touched me deeply.”

Do you long to tell a personal story, or to complete a critical work project? Are you serious about wanting to write, but finding it hard to move forward? Whether you are a novice writer, a blocked writer, or an experienced writer forging ahead, our sole purpose is to motivate and guide you on the path to writing with power and grace.

As your writing coach, we will:
  • Encourage you throughout the process
  • Identify your writing strengths and areas in need of improvement
  • Create a plan to keep you writing
  • Offer thought-provoking questions and observations on your work-in-progress
  • Offer substantive, verbal and written feedback to strengthen your writing
  • Customize writing exercises and activities to move you forward
  • Motivate you to complete compelling pieces
How does coaching work?

After an initial consultation at no charge, our fee includes a written strategic plan with specific goals; ongoing, substantive written and verbal feedback on your manuscript; and phone, email or in-person availability to answer questions, provide support and to keep you moving forward.

The Sun Magazine  Readers Write Section  -  Before submitting, read sample Readers Write submissions. Sy Sefransky, editor of The Sun Magazine says: “I’m looking for a writer who doesn’t know where her sentence is leading her; a writer who starts with her obsessions and whose heart is bursting with love; a writer sly enough to give the slip to her secret police, the ones with the power to condemn in the blink of an eye. It’s all right that she doesn’t know what she’s thinking until she writes it, as if the words already exist somewhere and draw her to them. She may not know how she got there, but she knows when she’s arrived.”
