THE NOT SO GOOD NEWS...

As we all know, there's a large area of our region that is drought-affected (or rainfall deficient), and let's not sugar coat it, our farmers and rural communities are doing it tough. 

AND THE GOOD NEWS...

You don't have to go through this alone. There are many support services available from the government, not-for-profit organisations and many of our amazing charities.

There is an extensive range of support resources available: 
  • Beef and sheep farmers - Agriculture Victoria has a contact list and advice on a range of resources and supports for beef and sheep farmers;
                  - Technical support - for on-farm advice
                   -  
Financial support - includes RFCS-Gippsland
                   -  Personal support - don't be afraid to pick up the phone if you need to talk 
  • Dairy farmers - GippsDairy are offering a free one-on-one session with a trained adviser through Dairy Australia’s 'Taking Stock' program. Contact Alan Cameron from GippsDairy on 5624 3900 to find out more and discuss other available services.
Current government support for farmers includes;
  • Farm Household Allowance (FHA), and
  • Concessional Loans (CL).
Both are discussed in more detail below, along with a list of Community Farmer Supporters.
FARM HOUSEHOLD ALLOWANCE BONUS
Farm Household Allowance (FHA) a Centrelink payment to assist with household expenses. 

The Minister of Agriculture, David Littleproud recently announced that the FHA payments have been extended from 3 years to 4 years to help farmers cope with ongoing challenges. 

In recognition of the hard times that our farmers are facing, FHA recipients will receive two lump sum payments totalling $12,000 for couples and $7,200 for singles.

The Regional Investment Corporation's (RIC) latest round of low-interest loans for farmers have been increased from $1 million to $2 million for both the; 
  • Farm investment loans - to support farmers with improving the strength, resilience and profitability of their farm, and
  • Drought loans - supporting farmers who are recovering from drought.

Half of Victoria's workplace deaths so far this year occurred on farms.

WorkSafe Head of Hazardous Industries and Industry Practice Michael Coffey said too many farm deaths were the result of one decision, often made in haste.  Mr Coffey went on to say "keeping safety front of mind for each task was crucial to making farming workplaces safer."   Read more
