November Newsletter

Apologies, as we didn't send out an October Newsletter.

We have had a great September and October of walking, including celebrating Julie's 50th !

How did September and October go?

We welcomed Andy, Jude and Chris who joined us for a Beginners Training Session.  

September saw us walk in many different areas; Blanchland, Sycamore Gap on Hadrian's Wall, Pilgrim's Causeway and Wall.

We were unlucky with the weather in October and we unfortunately had to cancel a couple of walks, something we don't do readily but safety and enjoyment are paramount to us.  

October saw us head into the Cheviots to Copper Snout and along Clennel Street, as well as the second trip to High and Low Force.

What's happening in November?

We have a varied choice of walks in November, both in distance and area.  There is also another beginners training session.

The shorter walks are on the 4th November, at Druridge Bay Country Park, and then on the 11th November, at Swarland Wood.  

We also have two longer walks. One on the 10th November, from Belford to St Cuthbert's Cave, and the second on the 24th November sees our longest walk of the year at Ponteland.

Julie will be heading down to Birmingham for the British Nordic Walking Instructors Convention.  This is vital to keep up to date with any changes in technique, warm ups and also to get together with the other instructors and share ideas. 

The beginners training walk is on the 25th November and we hope to welcome some new walkers.  If you know anyone who may be interested please let them know.

Booking onto walks

If you have any problems booking onto our walks via the website or paying for walks, please let us know.  

Please may we remind you that It is important that you book via the website or call me direct, in advance of the walk, and arrange payment via bank transfer or cheque. This ensures that I know exactly how many will be attending and can ensure that we have adequate volunteer cover..

With the darker days now arriving, we will be setting off on the walk on time, to make the most of the daylight. Sorry we cannot hang around for latecomers as others will get chilly waiting. If there is an issue, please contact me by phone or text on 07443495622.

Who are Strolls With Poles?

Chris is the latest walker to feature in our Newsletter.  Here is her story (it made Julie cry).
" I was introduced to Nordic walking by my neighbour, Claire, in November 2006.  I had recently moved to Northumberland from Manchester and was looking for outdoor activities to improve my level of fitness.  Two years before I had had major surgery for cancer followed by chemo and radiotherapy and was still feeling the after effects.

I was very naive about what Nordic walking entailed and headed off to the shops to buy walking poles - any excuse for a shopping opportunity ... Claire explained to me that I had bought the wrong poles and that Nordic walking poles were specially designed.  Claire also made me aware that there was a technique to be learned to achieve a full body workout whilst walking.  Luckily Julie, our leader, has a boot full of poles to lend out to newcomers and a way of putting people immediately at ease.

I was a little apprehensive when I went for my first walk but Julie started with a training session to show us the correct technique and I soon got into my stride.  I also learned that this Nordic walking group was more than just a way of getting fitter, it was also about making new friends and that laughter is the best medicine.  From that first walk I was hooked!

Since then I have been on many walks over all types of terrain and distances and in all types of weather.  The memories are being made and the photographs kept.  My fitness has improved so much that I completed the Coastal Challenge of over 26 miles in a very presentable time.

I can't thank Julie and Martin enough but also the other members of the group who dip in and out depending on other commitments. 

Every walk is different but always a pleasure.... Cheviot is a fading memory but in reality we were still smiling at the top.

Christmas Walk 

The anniversary walk of Strolls with Poles (and last of the year) is on 8th December.

This walk is so much fun and takes us to the decorated Christmas Tree at Dove Crag where we enjoy mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies (provided). Santa / Christmas hats are optional. 

We hope you can join us for the last walk of the year Christmas Walk.

Training Sessions

We have added another two training sessions onto our programme.  As always, they include a walk to practice what you are taught. 

As you may be aware, we follow the INWA 10 Step Method™ and, to date, most people have been taught up to step 6.  Don't worry it's not difficult to learn the advanced technique but it will take your Nordic walking to another level and help to burn EVEN MORE calories.

There will be two separate sessions:
Beginners (steps 1-6) - 25th November at Alnmouth Beach
Advanced (steps 7-10) - 9th March 2019 at Bamburgh Beach
