How would you feel if a person misused your name or swore using your name? Yet that happens all the time with the Lord's name. You cannot watch a TV program or a film these days without the name of God being used in some inappropriate way. The internet culture in which we live has even come up with an abbreviation that uses God's name in vain. The usage on social media and text messages has become so mainstream that it has now been added to the Oxford English Dictionary. I will not repeat it here.
The third of the Ten Commandments is in Exodus 20:7. It reads (NLT): “You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name". We are to worship the one and only God (the first commandment), in the correct way (the second commandment), and with correct words (the third Commandment).
In each commandment there is the positive as well as the negative. Let us now focus on the positive side of using God's name respectfully. Declaring God's name, hallowing God's name and reverencing God’s name. In Exodus 34:6–7 (NLT), we read how we are to talk about the Lord, "The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.” May the Lord help us to reverence His name in our words, thoughts and deeds.
I would like to highlight an urgent pray request. Monica Eronmosele is in critical condition in the ICU at James Paget. She is married with 2 teenage children. The family have recently been coming along to the Lowestoft Church.
Our services this Saturday/Sabbath are listed below, both at the Great Yarmouth Church and the Lowestoft Church. Zoom and Facebook will be live-streamed from the Great Yarmouth Church. This Sabbath Pastor Mark will be speaking at Great Yarmouth. John Sampson will be speaking at Lowestoft.
