Table Tennis Parent Social

On Wednesday evening, the Solefield hall was transformed into an arena of skill, fun and excitement with the second parents' and staff table tennis social event.

It was a great opportunity to christen the five new Joola tables and bats, which were so generously donated by one of our own parents!

It was wonderful to see a mixture of both mums and dads from a range of year groups participating. We played mini tournaments, firstly, with our strong hand and then a second with our weaker hand. It was both competitive and friendly and enjoyable for all.

Mr Cramp was the star of the night, winning both tournaments with exceptional sportsmanship to boot. If you are interested in joining us for the next one and fancy hitting a ball back and forwards, whilst enjoying a refreshing beverage, then please sign up for the next one!

History Workshop - Tudor Trumpet Player

This week, Year 4 had a Zoom workshop about an extraordinary Tudor, John Blanke.

John was an African trumpeter to Henry VII & Henry VIII and we have a portrait of him as well as documents that he wrote to the king.  He even requested a backdated pay rise from Henry VIII from 8p per day to 16p and Henry gave it to him!

Importantly, he remains the only black Tudor for whom we have an identifiable image. Year 4 learnt about his life and the role of a trumpeter at the Tudor court, playing fanfares and announcing the King...

Alumni Association

It was wonderful to welcome a small group of Alumni to our inaugural 'Solefield Alumni Association' Meeting. We welcomed Tom Mitchell (Solefield Alumnus - SA 1988), former SPA Chair and parent, Marina Press (2015) and Julian Spurling (SA 1971).  A lot of great ideas were discussed and strategies for finding our old boys; one of which was providing a student ticket at our first launch event. Alumni (old boys, former parents, teachers and staff) are invited to pop in at anytime from 6pm on Saturday 4th February. Book your place and share the link with any other Solefield alumni...click here to book!

Year 6 Learning Assembly

It was a delight to have parents join us for the Year 6 learning assembly. The boys presented their work beautifully to parents, who were treated to listening to all the boys speak so enthusiastically. This was followed by an engaging talk from Miss Adams on the exciting upcoming Year 6 residential trip.

It was wonderful to have many of the parents stay on to dicover more about life in Year 7&8 at Solefield School.

Thank you to all the parents for coming and a big well done to our Year 6 boys.

L'Epiphanie

Last week our exchange pupils from Toulon told us about how they celebrated the 6th January.

Some of our pupils from our community celebrate L’Epiphanie with their families. The galette des rois is a cake traditionally shared at Epiphany, on 6th  January. It celebrates the arrival of the Three Wise Men in Bethlehem and is composed of a puff pastry cake filled with frangipane, a cream made from sweet almonds, butter, eggs and sugar. A small charm is hidden inside, this is called the fève. When serving the cake…

  • The youngest in the family sits under the table.
  • The cake is sliced into pieces
  • The youngest says the name of each member of the family round the table
  • This keeps going until all the slices of cake have been given out
  • Everyone checks their piece, if they find a small charm (toy or ornament) they get to choose to be king or queen for the day
  • The children normally collect the small charms over the years.

Last Friday, Maxime Marchal enjoyed celebrating with his family. This photo shows their delicious homemade galette des rois!

Alex - Year 8 Prefect

* What does your role involve? Helping other members of my house by encouraging them and helping them out if they find something difficult, as well as being a good role model. We need to chant for our house as well.

* What do you most enjoy about your prefect role? Helping the younger children.

* In what ways do you feel you are making a difference to the boys at Solefield? I want to help make all the boys happy so that they love coming to school.
