Dear <<First Name>>,

At last, the sun appears! Unfortunately, Oyster Bay Oval - as you would expect - has not faired well after the amount of rain we have received. With this in mind, we have made the early call to cancel the Como vs River trial matches scheduled for 19 and 20 March to allow the fields as much chance as possible to recover with the hope we get 18 rounds of football played.

We have spoken to Council this morning and the
grounds will remain closed this weekend and they anticipate them to be closed all next week.

We are currently working on the training schedule. After a pitch inspection on 21 March (and subject to grounds being open), we will confirm with team managers when training can commence.

How can you help?

We understand that a field looking like a swimming pool is difficult to pass up, however, the GRFC committee has invested a great deal of time as well as made a significant financial commitment to maintain and try to improve our playing surface. A difficult task given the location.

Sporting fields are built for what the name suggests, sport. Oyster Bay, along with many other fields around the Sutherland Shire have been damaged by their misuse:
  • Riding bikes across the field,
  • Using bodyboards on the field, or
  • Throwing a ball to an off-leash dog
All of this tears up the turf. Again, sporting fields are not built for this use. All year long GRFC looks after Oyster Bay Oval, not just for us, but also for all of the other sporting groups that use it as well as many schools. Pre-COVID, Oyster Bay Oval was in use almost every day of the week.

We get that kids want to play, but please ask them to look after our ovals, for the benefit of all oval users. With the Sutherland Shire Football population what it is, we don’t have the luxury of an overflow of fields, which is why when a small number of fields “wash out” we have to cancel a whole day of games.

Thanks for your support.
