February highlights
New Maternity Disparities Taskforce established
The new Maternity Disparities Taskforce was announced by the Department of Health and Social Care last week.
Minister for Equalities Kemi Badenoch MP is a member of the taskforce and will share her knowledge and expertise in this area. She has previously written about her recommendations to improve maternal health disparities.
Data shows there is an almost 2-fold difference in mortality rates between women from Asian ethnic groups and white women, and they are also higher for black women. Studies have also found black women are 40% more likely to experience a miscarriage than white women.
Gypsy, Roma and Traveller ethnic group summary published
We published a new Gypsy, Roma and Traveller ethnic group summary at the start of February.
The summary includes:
- an overview of facts and figures about people from the Gypsy, Roma and Irish Traveller ethnic groups
- a discussion of data quality issues
This is the fourth ethnic group summary published on Ethnicity facts and figures. Other summaries focus on the black Caribbean, Chinese and Indian ethnic groups.
Elsewhere on Ethnicity facts and figures, we have updated the List of ethnic groups page to reflect the 2021 Census categories.
