Sierra Club COVID-19 Updates

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Sierra Club has cancelled all in-person meetings, public events, and outings through June 14th. All scheduled outings are cancelled indefinitely, and we hope that physical distancing and other actions will help contain the virus. We are continually evaluating the situation based on Sierra Club leadership.

The only Angeles ICO events available right now are our monthly fundraising meetings (2nd Mondays at 7:30 pm) and general meetings (3rd Mondays at 7:30 pm) happening through conference call and Zoom.

Information and policy around COVID-19 are changing daily. Please check with your local news report, and be sure to follow and model the guidelines for safe social distancing activities, especially as trails and open spaces are beginning to reopen.
Angeles ICO Welcomes Four New Leaders!
BRIAN GONZALEZ- As a high school teacher in South Central, Brian aspires to be a bridge that connects his kids to the magical world of nature. His happy place is in the tide pools, because it’s such an adventure to awake early in the morning to catch a negative tide. As a child, his grandparents took the entire family to Yosemite. Hiking Half Dome and singing around the campfire are still wonderful memories.
CHRISTINA NORBERG- Is a high school physics teacher in South Central. She grew up in New York State, and it was there that her love of nature began. She moved to Los Angeles six years ago, and began her school’s connection with ICO in 2017. Bringing her students into the natural world has been one of the most rewarding parts of her job as a teacher, and she appreciates all that ICO has done to make this happen for her kids.
LAURIE WOERFEL- Growing up in a beautiful small waterfront village in Wisconsin, Laurie enjoyed exploring the surrounding forests, rivers,  lakes and islands. She moved to the Los Angeles area in the late 1970’s and took up hiking and backpacking. During her 35 years of teaching in LAUSD she started hiking clubs at several high schools and began a relationship with ICO. Now that she has retired, she is excited to share her love of the outdoors as an ICO leader.
PETER NIEMIEC- Peter grew up in a very urban environment just outside New York City. He moved to California when he was in his twenties. Its majestic beauty changed his life. He and his wife took their children hiking and backpacking frequently. His wife became an ICO leader first and inspired him to follow, so that they could share their enthusiasm for the outdoors with many other children.
Certified California Naturalist Program
ICO leaders, Catherine Ronan and Jamie Lowry, share their experiences in the Certified California Naturalist program. Read more about their experiences and learn more about the program in the link below. This is a great way to increase your knowledge of our local natural environment.
