Frances S. Tucker After School Program
January 2018 marked the commencement of our after school program at Francis S. Tucker Elementary School in West Coconut Grove thanks to the support and generosity of Coral Gables Senior High Alumni Alexander Tecle.

We provide up to twenty-five 3rd and 4th grade boys with a free 2-hour after school program and meal served everyday. Our program will be offered year round during the fall and spring semesters. The first hour of programming is dedicated to ensure that our students understand and complete homework assignments as well as any other assignments their teachers ask of us. The second hour is for recreational and team building activities which include sports, games as well as guest speakers.

We are in the process of procuring the funding to continue to offer this program during the summer months as well as providing a similar program for only female students commencing at the beginning of the 2018 academic year.

Field Trip to UM Spring Practice
Our kids from Francis S. Tucker Elementary School visiting the University of Miami’s Spring Football Practice with Coach Ephraim Banda and meeting their pen pals All-American Safety Jaquan Johnson and Derrick Smith. In additional to being a standout student-athlete, Jaquan Johnson has been a weekly visitor at our after school program and has done a tremendous job setting an example and serving as a mentor to our kids.

Ponce De Leon Middle School Teacher's Aid Program
Beginning in the fall of 2017, we provided a unique opportunity to Ponce De Leon Middle School in which we placed our tutors in Math and English classes to serve as teachers aids during school hours. This past quarter, we had over a dozen volunteers working on a weekly basis with over 300 students in remedial Math and English classes as well as some honors classes, providing additional support and supervision to the school thanks to the tremendous support provided by the University of Miami English Composition Department lead by Mrs. Kimberly McGrath Moreira.

African American Read-A-Loud
This spring marked our second year participating in Ponce De Leon Middle School’s African-American Read-A-Loud Day where local leaders and activists visited with the students to read and talk to them about what African-American history means to them and how it has shaped their lives. This year, The Home Team was able to bring former NBA Champion Shane Battier and Univeristy of Miami student-athletes Danielle Savage, Niara Hill, Amy Taintor and Jaalen Jones.

Coral Gables Senior High
This spring was our 3rd year supporting the Coral Gables Senior High Schools football program with our academic support team as well as coaching and facilitating the college recruiting process for our senior participants.

This year, Gilbert Frierson was one of the pioneers that was part of a recruiting class presented with the opportunity to sign his letter of intent on December 20th, to play for and accept a full athletic scholarship at the University of Miami. 2018 was the first year where prospective football student-athletes were able to sign with the school of choice during the early signing day period which enables high school seniors to graduate a year early and enroll at the college/university of their choice to begin their collegiate career as student-athletes.

In addition, two other seniors received full athletic scholarships to continue their football careers. Defensive lineman Xavier Burns received a full athletic scholarship to attend Walsh University while linebacker Derrius Perryman received a full athletic scholarship to attend Bryant University.

Community Involvement
The Home Team Founder/President Alex Pou speaking to a freshman English composition class on the impact social responsibility has on the Miami communities as well as the community outreach opportunities available to them.
Since the inception of our programming, The Home Team has relied heavily on the support and resources the University of Miami has made available, particularly the Athletic Department, the English Department and the Butler Center for Service and Leadership.

Piano Slam 10
Thanks to one of our larger supporters, we were able to bring our Coral Gables Senior High program participants to Piano Slam 10, a Classical/Hip-Hop mash up featuring internationally acclaimed Trivella Piano Duo mixing up Bach, Chopin, Kaufman and J Balvin with the beats of DJ Cardi, Brazzdance, and the debut works of Miami's hot young poets. The PIANO SLAM is a fantastically hip musical showcase for the voices of Miami's youth in an extraordinary collaboration of talented international and local artists.

MKTplace at Goombay Plaza
Led by the University of Miami School of Architecture, with funding from the Knight Foundation, MKTplace at Goombay Plaza is a community-driven food market and public space. The non-profit project provides resources and support to entrepreneurs, creatives and civic leaders in the Coconut Grove neighborhood.

MKTplace at Goombay Plaza creates a relaxed and inviting gathering place with a distinctive Grove-Caribbean flair, infused with art, music and special events. A perfect place for neighbors, friends and visitors to connect, meet and mingle over food and drink.

Over the past few months, our program participants assisted local artist Wendell McShine in his artful collaboration completing the Goombay Plaza Mural.
