Welcome to MERIDIAN!

It has been a long time in the making but we are finally running!

Now that the MERIDIAN project has officially started, a very exciting time for our team at Dalhousie has begun, and we hope you are sharing this excitement. One thing I have learned since coming to Dalhousie in 2013 is how important the ocean is for humanity - biologically, environmentally, and economically. In this project we will all have the opportunity to work together on a broad spectrum of ocean-related data science problems and, together with our ocean scientist colleagues, push mankind’s knowledge about oceans. This endeavor will only succeed if we are developing strong partnerships – between people from different fields at MERIDIAN nodes, as well as across Canada and on an international level. It goes without saying that we are open to new partnerships, connecting MERIDIAN to Computer and Ocean Scientists from other universities, government labs and companies. We would like MERIDIAN to become a reference for ocean-related data “know-how” and resources, which will give us national and international visibility. This may not come easy, but with our very strong, dedicated team of partners, our caliber and vision it will draw an exceptional team of experts towards MERIDIAN. And we have already made first steps in that direction.

Looking forward to working together! I would like to wish all MERIDIANers bonne chance

Her credentials include a PhD in Marine Ecology, Project Management Professional certification, and Certificate in Financial Management. She uses these skill sets at the intersection of industry, academia and government for the betterment of ocean research. She is deeply passionate about the oceans and Canada’s role in ocean research and management.
Ines Hessler - MERIDIAN Senior Data Manager (parental leave until April 2018)
Ines recently moved from sunny Australia to Canada where she was working as a Data Consultant at the Australian National Data Service and was, amongst others, responsible for several data management intensive research projects. Before starting to explore the world of data management, Ines was a post-doctoral researcher in Germany and Australia and specialized in past marine environmental and climate change. She completed her education in Germany and holds a BSc and MSc in Geology and a PhD in Marine Geosciences.
Renata Dividino - MERIDIAN Acting Senior Data Manager
Renata has extensive expertise in knowledge management and artificial intelligence. She received her Ph.D. degree of Compute Sciences in Germany and has worked in diverse international research institutes (e.g. the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence & the Institute for Web Science and Technologies). Renata is member of the Institute for Big Data Analytics at Dalhousie University where she researches how to better support the current and future information needs of naval decision makers aboard Royal Canadian Navy vessels.
our vision, mission & core values

We are currently defining our vision, mission and core values and want your feedback! So, please send us your thoughts (dividino@dal.ca).

VISION

MISSION
MERIDIAN’s mission is
To assist the ocean data community in the use of advanced data science technologies to discover, access, analyze and visualize global marine data. MERIDIAN will provide ocean data management expertise to ensure that data are well described, discoverable, accessible and reusable no matter their physical location.

CORE VALUES
Reliable - We will provide reliable data services to the ocean community.

Trust, Integrity and Communication - We will work with our partners on the basis of trust, integrity and open communication lines.

High quality - Our team is solution and detail oriented, and strives for an exceptional level of quality in every aspect.

our communication strategy
We believe that the success of this project largely depends on the efficient and honest communication with our team, partners and stakeholders. The below graphic outlines our communication priorities for the next 6 months.

Below we would like to introduce our communication priorities for the next 6 months. For instance we are working on (A) streamlining our internal Dalhousie MERIDIAN Team communication, (B) evaluating communication requirements with our partners, which includes establishing regular meetings with MERIDIAN's technical project leads and a strong working relationship with members of the Canadian Ocean Consortium, and (C) setting up general information channels including our populating our website meridian.cs.dal.ca, becoming active on Twitter and distributing our e-newsletter on a quarterly basis.
