Monthly Newsletter, May 2022

Dear MAA members,

Thank you, thank you thank you.

Thank you to the members. Thank you to all the volunteers. Thank you to our donors and collectors. Thank you to the board.

I have seen a lot of growth and richness in my time of being a member, board member, and president of MAA, and they happened because of you volunteering, participating in shows, attending educational events and making new art friends. All of your participation has made MAA strong and successful, and it will no doubt continue to be so under my successor, Jennifer Kahn Barlow, (shown in this photo with me at the "Nature of Art" reception).

Previously vice president of programs, Jen is also a food painter who shows her oil paintings throughout the mid-Atlantic region. She grew up in the Boston suburbs and lived in the DC-area home since 1999. Jen and the rest of our 2022-23 Board of Directors officially begin their roles June 1.

Your help to Jen and the Board will be as greatly appreciated as it was during my terms as president and all of the presidents before me. I hope you will join me in contributing to the growth and richness of MAA far into the future.

And if I haven't mentioned it before, thank you!

Alan Rich, President

News & Announcements

Plans are underway for our biggest show

We are starting to plan for the 2022 Paint The Town Labor Day Show, MAA's biggest event of the year. The show is September 3-5, and show managers are Anastasia Walsh and Paula Zeller. Registration opens in mid-July.

What's new this year: To include as many members as possible, the limit for artwork will be two per person. We are also adding a category for photography (to the existing categories of landscape, portrait, still life, abstract, sculptures, student invitational, plein air and of course, Kensington).

All Abstracts at the Daily Dish restaurant

Stop by the Daily Dish restaurant in Silver Spring to see our "All Abstracts" exhibition. Fifteen works are on display—including Sally O'Connell's fiber and mix media piece Cicada Spring (shown)—through June 30. Thanks to Jamie Downs for being the show manager.

A picture perfect day for art and trolleys

We had ideal weather and loads of camaraderie during our plein air festival at the National Capital Trolley Museum in Colesville. Three dozen artists joined, we sold 11 works, and Rajendra KC (shown) won first place for Street Car Hall. Read more about the event and see photos in this blog post.
One Theme, Many Interpretations: "Action"

This month's Many Interpretations Online Gallery features work inspired by "action." Shown is Pritha Srinivasan's Liftoff. Submit a free entry for our next theme, "stillness," via this form by May 20.
