💌 Welcome to Issue #66 of The Conscious Edit!

It's no secret that we need a dramatically different fashion system: one that centers people and the planet above profits.

One that honors the art of fashion and the beauty of self-expression — but that doesn't involve exploitation along the way.

🧵 Contributing Writer Stella wrote up a piece last month on alternative fashion business models offering inspiring blueprints for what an equitable fashion ecosystem that operates within planetary boundaries might look like.

🪡 And this week, Stella did a deep dive into one of the specific business models: made-to-order fashion brands over on our sister site, Conscious Fashion Collective.

👗 Also over on CFC this week: writer Jharna has rounded up 25 inspiring WOC-owned conscious fashion brands that are making waves with their voices and artistic visions in this space. Because a better future for fashion must be one that is inclusive and diverse.

Finally (though this certainly isn't a comprehensive list!) a better fashion future is one that's collaborative and community-centered.

📆 So, we're excited to be launching the Conscious Fashion Event Directory where you can learn about upcoming virtual and in-person events. (Or submit your upcoming sustainable fashion event.)

Now let's get on to the rest of this week's Conscious Edit...

Can Made-to-Order Slow Down Fashion's Unsustainable Speed? Stella Hertantyo for Conscious Fashion Collective

"Fast fashion brands are notorious for producing far too many clothes. These huge fashion companies produce excessive volumes, with the hopes that more people will buy their clothes at an ever-increasing rate.

But what if fashion brands only produced exactly as many garments as they sold, so that waste and overconsumption were minimized and the speed of fashion was actively slowed down?

This is exactly the mission and ethos of fashion brands using a made-to-order business model."
