💌 Welcome to Issue #68 of The Conscious Edit

As I mentioned in last week's issue, I'm feeling excited to embrace a slow fashion summer. 🌞

💭 After reading "The Day The World Stops Shopping" (a previous reading rec from this newsletter!) and "Less is More: How Degrowth Can Save The World", I've been thinking about how much our roles in society center around consuming

We need to buy things of course — and I'm all for making intentional purchases — but consuming stuff has gone from being something we do to something that we are. It feels like we're more regularly called "consumers" than people!

💵  Corporations want us to feel like we're one step away from happiness if we just buy their product. Governments want us to keep shopping so economic growth continues. Peers may signal that "success" is defined by what you own and how much money you make.

But how can we transform our economies and societies so that they actually see our values as HUMANS more than consumers (or workers)?

🌿 Enter in: degrowth.

Or post-growth... or a wellbeing economy... or basically an economy that doesn't pursue endless economic growth at the cost of human exploitation and ecological destruction.

👖 But let's bring it back to fashion: What would a people-centered and planet-centered economy look like for the fashion industry?

Well, we'll be exploring this very topic throughout this summer here!

And we're kicking it off with contributor Stella's piece on what degrowth could look like in fashion.

🎙 Plus the entire upcoming season of the Conscious Style Podcast will be ALL about post-growth and slow fashion. New episodes start up next Tuesday, so make sure you're subscribed here!

What is Degrowth — And What Would it Look Like in Fashion? | Stella Hertantyo for Conscious Life & Style

The planet's resources are being depleted far faster than they can renew. We are in a plastic waste — and clothing waste — crisis. Overproduction and overconsumption are wrecking havoc on people and ecosystems around the world.

Could degrowth be the answer?

Contributing writer Stella is diving into exactly what degrowth is, what it looks like from a Global South lens, and what a post-growth future could look like for fashion. (Hint: it looks a lot like the slow fashion movement!)

10 Plastic Free Sunscreens for to Pack in Your Low Waste Beach Bag

According to skincare experts (and of course, dermatologists!) sunscreen is the most important beauty product you could use for both skin health and to help slow down signs of skin aging.

Unfortunately, many sunscreens come in wasteful packaging and include additional ingredients that can harm our environments — especially oceans.

Check out these eco-friendly (and skin friendly!) sunscreen finds curated by our beauty & fashion writerm Jharna.

Fast Fashion Dumped in the Desert

This short documentary from DW highlights the hidden costs of fast fashion.

The 30-minute video shows the heaps of used and unsold clothes that have been piling up in the Atacama desert in Chile and tells the story of the true impact of fashion's influx of cheap clothes.
