💌 Welcome to Issue #68 of The Conscious Edit
As I mentioned in last week's issue, I'm feeling excited to embrace a slow fashion summer. 🌞
💭 After reading "The Day The World Stops Shopping" (a previous reading rec from this newsletter!) and "Less is More: How Degrowth Can Save The World", I've been thinking about how much our roles in society center around consuming.
We need to buy things of course — and I'm all for making intentional purchases — but consuming stuff has gone from being something we do to something that we are. It feels like we're more regularly called "consumers" than people!
💵 Corporations want us to feel like we're one step away from happiness if we just buy their product. Governments want us to keep shopping so economic growth continues. Peers may signal that "success" is defined by what you own and how much money you make.
But how can we transform our economies and societies so that they actually see our values as HUMANS more than consumers (or workers)?
🌿 Enter in: degrowth.
Or post-growth... or a wellbeing economy... or basically an economy that doesn't pursue endless economic growth at the cost of human exploitation and ecological destruction.
👖 But let's bring it back to fashion: What would a people-centered and planet-centered economy look like for the fashion industry?
Well, we'll be exploring this very topic throughout this summer here!
And we're kicking it off with contributor Stella's piece on what degrowth could look like in fashion.
🎙 Plus the entire upcoming season of the Conscious Style Podcast will be ALL about post-growth and slow fashion. New episodes start up next Tuesday, so make sure you're subscribed here!
