VFW 2814 NEWSLETTER

OCTOBER 2021

Commander's Message
Thank you to everyone who supported or participated in the many events we had in September. The Community Shred Event and Breakfast at the VFW went very well and we are thankful to Shred 2 You for their complimentary services.

As discussed at recent House Committee meetings, we will be raising drink prices by $0.50 to help cover operational costs. We need your continued support to ensure The Canteen and Post doors stay open. Please see the Event Calendar included at the bottom of this newsletter and posted throughout The Canteen for our hours and upcoming events.

The official vote for the price increase will be at the October 7 general meeting with the raise taking effect by November 8. The next House Committee meeting is October 21 at 6:00 pm.

Breakfast at the VFW Photos

Auxiliary President's Message
Phew, what a month September was! We were quite busy at VFW 2814 and out in the community so I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every volunteer who lent their time and energy to these projects! We participated in the annual Patriot Day candlelight vigil, POW/MIA Recognition Day, CA National Guard Counterdrug Task Force's annual Stand Down event at Camp San Luis Obispo, and our first-ever Community Shred Event with a breakfast by the Post! Read and see more about all of these activities further in this month's newsletter. This was all in addition to our regularly scheduled Tuesday night dinners and Wednesday Burgers & Brats Lunch!

This past month had great energy and I hope it catapults us into the holiday season and the New Year. We are working on some more events and activities for the 2021-22 year so keep your eyes and ears open for details on how you can participate and support VFW 2814 in the coming months.

I would also like to recognize Past President and current Sr. Vice President Kathy Strang for recently earning the All-State Auxiliary President Award! It is a well-deserved recognition of her leadership in 2020-21.

Next week we will be welcoming our District Officers for their annual visit and inspection at our regularly scheduled General Meeting. It's also a very full agenda so I encourage Auxiliary 2814 members to join us at our monthly meeting to learn more about what's ahead and to lend their voice.

Lastly, is there something we are missing in the newsletter, weekly Canteen email, on our website or on Facebook that you feel needs to be shared? Submit your ideas to me at vfwauxiliary2814@gmail.com and help us further improve our communications to our members and supporters!

As always, I hope to see you at VFW 2814 soon!

Sabrina Sakaguchi
VFW Auxiliary 2814 President

PRICE INCREASE NOTICE

Due to rising costs to operate The Canteen, all drink prices will increase by $0.50 by November 8, after approval at the October 7 general meeting.

PATRIOTS DAY RECAP

On September 11, 2021, VFW 2814 Post and Auxiliary members and some members of the community gathered to remember the many lives lost 20 years ago. Post Quartermaster Chris Rohrberg read a brief speech reminding attendees the importance of never forgetting the sacrifices made that fateful day. Attendees ended the ceremony with a candlelight vigil outside the Post facing Morro Road. Click on the image above or here to view more photos.

POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY RECAP

Post and Auxiliary members and their guests gathered on September 17 to honor and recognize the thousands of men and women who were or still are Prisoners of War (POW) or Missing in Action (MIA). Auxiliary Treasurer Gail Teeple read a passage detailing the various components of the Missing Man Table which is a permanent exhibit in The Canteen and Post Chaplain Jay Hoehn led the group in a prayer. COMMUNITY SHRED EVENT RECAP

The first-ever Community Shred Event hosted by the Auxiliary was a great success! We were visited by some 65 community members who dropped off over 260 boxes of paperwork to be destroyed. The on-site shredding services were provided by Santa Maria-based Shred 2 You who comped their fees for this inaugural event. Participants were encouraged to donate $5 per banker's box of paperwork with several donating well above that suggested amount. The Auxiliary received over $1,900 in donations! A date for 2022 is in the works and will be announced shortly. Click on the image above or here for more photos.

The VFW 2814 wants to send a big THANK YOU to Petra and Omar Hernandez of Shred 2 You for their participation in our first-ever Community Shred Event held on September 25. Through their Santa Maria-based company that has been in business since 2012, the married couple regularly supports veteran and military organizations throughout the Central Coast. For our inaugural shred event, they waived their fees for the shredding service. They are also proud military parents and said it was their honor to support VFW 2814.
