What does it mean to be a Christ-follower? I have been in many discussions over this very topic. At times the answers I hear are too complicated to be of any real value, while at other times the answers are so simplistic that they are not worth anyone’s time.
In order to truly answer this question, one must start with the gospels, (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) in order to read the words of Christ and see how he lived his life. From there we can follow him.
At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, read a passage from the Prophet Isaiah:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor”(Luke 4:18-19).
When he finished, he rolled up the scroll and declared, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (v. 21).
As people who are called to follow in the footsteps of our Lord and Savior, his business is our business. The call for justice in our world is the reality of the Kingdom of Heaven coming to bear on the earth itself. Freedom, healing, and favor are ours to enjoy and ours to share. As we look at the breakdown in our culture today, there is nothing we need more than God’s Kingdom come in the flesh.
Oh, Holy Spirit, fill your church with your power. Let us bear your fruit as we remain in you. Use us as your instruments to bring your Kingdom to the world around us.
