Our country seems to be tearing itself apart right now. The Internet was full of people’s opinions and arguments about the Covid-19 pandemic, the government’s response, and the media’s role in it all. Now we are confronted with issues of racism, abuses of power, rioting, theft, and arson. While all of this is happening around us, how should we respond?
I have found that when things are chaotic around me, the number of voices in my head increases. Social media, the news, and other forms of input can become distracting, confusing, and ultimately overwhelming. In times like this, a “spring cleaning” of the heart and mind is what is needed.
For the Christian, the way forward starts by refocusing our attention upwards and inwards. The words of the Apostle Paul are key: “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:1-3).
Unplug from the news and social media for a limited amount of time. Seek out people who will converse with you in a manner that is uplifting and life giving. Spend time in the Word of God, meditating on it and seeking the Lord through prayer. When we do this, then we can hear clearly the words of truth from the Lord.
Love to all,
Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean;
remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes;
cease to do evil, learn to do good;seek justice,
correct oppression;bring justice to the fatherless,
plead the widow's cause.
“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord:
though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red like crimson,
they shall become like wool.” (Isaiah 1:16-18).
