Dear Friends at CTK,

Jesus stood on the side of a hill with a large crowd of people around him. According to the religious system of the day, he was not an official Rabbi or Teacher of the Law, nor was he a Priest or a Levite. Yet the masses came pouring out of their towns and villages to hear him preach. It was near the beginning of this sermon that he said, “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet” (Matthew 5:13).

There is something missing today in our understanding of it what means to be a Christ follower. In most churches the majority of disciples sit passively by while the leaders (those with official titles) do what is often referred to as ministry. However, this was not how Jesus functioned, nor is it how he taught his disciples to operate. From the beginning of the New Testament in Matthew to its end in Revelation, every Christ follower is called to have an impact on the world around us.

This past winter, I was reminded by one of my colleagues that, “Leadership is influence.” Influence is the power or capacity to cause an effect in another person or thing. When we understand leadership in this way, we discover that our influence in the world goes well beyond titles, organizations, and hierarchies. Every one of us can be a leader because each of us is able to influence people and things around us in very personal ways. In our neighborhoods, our places of employment, or even in line at the local grocery store, we can impact people around us by our words and our actions.

Brothers and Sisters, you have more influence in the world around you than you realize. The same Holy Spirit that was in Jesus Christ is now in us. Each one of us can be salt and light!

Love to all,
Tim Davis.
