Maine Ranked Top 5 in the Country in the Value Outdoor Recreation Added to Statewide GDP in 2021

We knew that Maine's nearly $3 Billion outdoor industry had a significant impact on our state's economy, and now, thanks to the latest data from the Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis' (BEA) 2021 report, there are even more impressive numbers to back it up. Not only did it show an increase in the outdoor recreation industry as a whole (it went up 19.3% overall), it also tracked growth in outdoor recreation employment, gear manufacturing, and measured massive leaps in guiding/outfitting of 43% in comparison to 2020.

RECAP: November MOB Scene
A small but strong contingent of MOB members braved the wind and rain to come out to the MOB Scene last night at Banded Brewing after taking a small tour of Tekto and learning about the company from founder Marko Mancić. Big thanks to the Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission for sponsoring the event and we look forward to hosting more MOB Scenes around the state in the new year!

MOB Attends the Discovery Marketplace
MOB is quickly gaining a national reputation of being a place to discover emerging brands in the outdoor industry. That came to light in November when we were invited to attend the first Discovery Marketplace hosted by Grassroots Outdoor Alliance at their Connect trade show in Kansas City.

We brought a small Maine team of Opolis Optics, Brant & Cochran, Foothill Fuels, and Good To-Go, who had the opportunity to meet buyers from more than a hundred specialty outdoor retail stores around the country. We'll be packing up next month to head to Outdoor Retailer Snow Show in Salt Lake City, Utah with seven brands.

Thank you to the Maine Office of Outdoor Recreation and the Department of Economic and Community Development for supporting these domestic trade opportunities and giving us the chance to showcase Maine's innovative outdoor industry around the country!

Member Spotlight
Earlier this fall, Jennifer Scism, MOB member and owner and founder of Good To-Go, traveled to Washington DC as an MOB ambassador to advocate for the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Established in 1964, LWCF allocates $900 million dollars per year to fund a wide range of conservation and outdoor recreation, from investing in our national parks, to creating local parks and playing fields, to conserving forests. In the six decades since LWCF was established, both the population and the needs have grown.
 
In DC, Jennifer joined the Appalachian Mountain Club and Molly and Alec London of W.W. London Woodlot Management and to ask our senators and congresspeople to increase LWCF funding by an additional $450 million per year. The Londons conduct sustainable logging of AMC’s Maine forestland, which remains open to the public for backcountry recreation.
