Today at the United Nations history has been made! Honduras has confirmed the ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which will now come into force on 22 January 2021. Jamaica and Nauru had joined the Treaty on Friday.
This means that nuclear weapons will be banned in the same way as chemical and biological weapons have been banned, because of their indiscriminate nature and humanitarian consequences.
Christian CND has been part of global movement calling for a Nuclear Ban Treaty for many years. As a partner of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons we won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017 for the work which lead to this Treaty.
Over the past three years we have been talking to diplomats, church leaders and politicians about the Treaty. Most importantly of all we have been praying regularly for the Treaty to come into force and today we join with Christians around the world who are rejoicing at this news.
Christians have played a huge role in this success. The Vatican was one of the first states to join the Treaty in 2017; the Pacific Council of Churches urged states to join, many did so; and the Church of England called on the UK government to respond positively.
There is still more work to be done, but for today we give thanks and glory to God for this Treaty and for all those who have worked for it over many years.
