Managing Chronic Conditions

Millions of older adults live with one or more chronic health conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, asthma and more.

To help older adults with these conditions, AAASWFL is excited to announce that we will be offering the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program across Southwest Florida.  Along with the Florida
Department of Elder Affairs, we have received a grant to offer these workshops in Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hendry and Sarasota Counties.  The program helps people with chronic diseases become more engaged with their health and develop confidence in managing their conditions.

In the coming months, we'll be training volunteers to lead this program-- if you're interested in becoming a volunteer leader, call the Elder Helpline at 866-413-5337 (866-41-ELDER) and ask to speak with Sherry Young.

Did you know that you can get free, unbiased, one-on-one counseling on your Medicare issues through AAASWFL?

The SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) program helps thousands of Southwest Floridians every year! SHINE counselors can help you better understand your benefits, evaluate your many coverage options, find cost-saving programs, and even help you report Medicare fraud and abuse!

Counseling sites can be found on FloridaSHINE.org or by calling the Elder Helpline at 866-413-5337 (866-41-ELDER).  The Helpline can also help you if you want to become a SHINE volunteer!

Volunteer Training offered in Sarasota

Each year, one in four older adults has a serious fall-- and many never fully recover.

If you'd like to help older adults improve their balance and reduce their risk of falling, we want you to take our Matter of Balance volunteer training!

A Matter of Balance is one of several health and wellness workshops we offer across Southwest Florida.  On August 27 & 28, we're offering a volunteer training for A Matter of Balance at Friendship Centers in Sarasota. Training to lead A Matter of Balance workshops is FREE with a commitment to lead classes for AAASWFL.

Want to join us?  Call the Elder Helpline at 866-413-5337 and ask to speak with Sherry Young.

You're Prepared-- But Are Your Pets?

We all (hopefully) have our emergency plans in place for Hurricane Season.  But do Fluffy and Fido have plans, too?

If you need to evacuate, it's not safe to leave your pets behind.  Plan for evacuation by checking hotel policies, asking friends or relatives if they can host your furry friends, and prepare a list of boarding facilities or animal shelters just in case.

Find more tips for preparing your pets for an emergency on the
State of Florida preparedness website at FloridaDisaster.org

Kudos and Thank Yous

Thank you note
Our AAAASWFL team works hard to help older adults maintain their independence-- and sometimes we like to share the kudos we get.  Here's part of a note we received about Sharleen, one of our long-term care specialists:

"I found her knowledgeable, efficient and moreover proactive. Her work was thorough and she explained all the necessary steps in an easy to understand manner for the lay person such as myself. She has given me back confidence in the Florida Social Services Programs and has been a breath of fresh air after my other previous experiences and dealings. Her professionalism, skills and knowledge of her job gave me the feeling that I was her only client!"
