Age-Friendly Florida

Only four states in the USA have been designated as Age-Friendly, and Florida is now part of this elite group.
The AARP Age-Friendly initiative encourages communities to prepare for the rapid aging of the U.S. population by paying attention to factors that influence the health and well-being of older adults.
“In Florida, we are taking tangible steps to make our state more livable for residents of all ages – especially our senior population,” said Governor Ron DeSantis.

Buy a Bag and Support AAASWFL

For the entire month of June, AAASWFL is the beneficiary of the Winn-Dixie community bag program in North Fort Myers.
If you purchase one of these cute reusable bags at the North Fort Myers Winn-Dixie, AAASWFL will receive a $1 donation. Donations will go towards our Agnes Laitinen Unmet Needs fund, which assists older adults in crisis.
The
North Fort Myers Winn-Dixie is located at 5660 Bayshore Rd.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

World Elder Abuse Awareness DayEvery year on June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is commemorated around the globe.
Abuse includes physical and emotional abuse, neglect,  and exploitation. To help raise awareness, AAASWFL is participating in events this month across Southwest Florida-- see our event calendar below for more details.
You can support the cause on June 15 by wearing purple to raise awareness of Elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

Dementia Caring in Cape Coral

DCCIWe were proud to be part of a big announcement in May-- The Cape Coral Police Department is the first law enforcement entity in Lee County to be designated as Dementia Caring.
The Florida Department of Elder Affairs' Dementia Care and Cure Initiative (DCCI) aims to create a more dementia-caring state where those living with dementia, their families, and loved ones are supported within their communities.  The Cape Coral Police completed intensive training to earn the designation.

DNA Medicare Scam in the News

We're warning the community about a Medicare scam that's been spotted in our area. Purported genetic testing companies have been billing Medicare for tens of thousands of dollars in fraudulent DNA tests.
You may have seen this scam on ABC-7 or read about it in the News-Press, Naples Daily News, Charlotte Sun, Venice Florida Weekly, SRQ Daily, the Lake Okeechobee News and many other newspapers.
If you think you've been targeted, call the Elder Helpline at 866-41-ELDER and ask for an appointment with a SHINE/Senior Medicare Patrol counselor.

What Are Your Needs?

Older Woman on PhoneIn the next few weeks, AAASWFL will be sending out a survey to determine the needs of older adults in our community.  This Needs Assessment is part of our Area Plan, where we try to identify gaps in service in Southwest Florida.
If you receive a copy of this survey, please complete it-- and then share it with a friend.  The more feedback we receive, the more we can help our community!
