Friends of Tennessee's Babies with Special Needs

Friends of Tennessee's Babies with Special Needs Quarterly
August 2020

Each quarter we'll highlight how we're working to enhance the potential of infants and young children with special needs by offering support to their families and the early intervention professionals who serve them...Because Babies Can't Wait!

Current Events

In an effort to give our families something fun and safe to do during the pandemic, we have hosted two Drive in movie nights! We partnered with the Parkway Drive-In movie theatre in Maryville to offer our friends a night at the movies. Knowing that most of our families are still in isolation, our hope was to give them something to look forward to.  These events have been so much fun! We love getting the opportunity to see our families. The owner cranks up oldies music and the kids get the freedom to run around in the grassy area before the movie gets started. The atmosphere is relaxed and safe. Most families just stay to themselves but we get the chance to wave at, smile and love on these precious families. We have also been able to welcome other special needs groups in our community to join us for this event.  We think it is important to let special families know that they are not alone. Our hope is to provide some memories and smiles!

Volunteers

A core part of our support to babies and young children with special needs, their families, and the professionals who serve them relies on volunteers to make our programs and events a success. Upcoming Events

Friends of TN’s Babies with Special Needs sponsors several events each year that the families we serve can attend for free.

All of our events are made possible through generous donations by corporations, individual donors, grants, and fundraising activities.
On August 22nd, our families will enjoy a day at Zoo Knoxville, made possible through a Variety grant, and donations from Greater Knoxville Sertoma and Stowers Cat.  This is always a fun day for families to get out of the house and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine, yet still be able to practice social distancing to stay safe.  It is also a great opportunity for families to network together with other special families.
On September 12th, our families are invited to come to the Ripley’s Aquarium in Gatlinburg, TN.  This is always a very popular event that even our very small and very special babies and young children can enjoy.  It is a very soothing and relaxing atmosphere with lots of beautiful colors and sites to see.

Our annual Jazz Baby fundraising event is going virtual this year.  It will include an online Silent and Live Auction with something for everyone!  Because of this one event, we have been able to continue helping families by providing needed supplies and resources.  With the COVID 19 pandemic, our babies need your help now more than ever.  There are plenty of opportunities for you to become a “Friend”!  We would LOVE to have you join us for this awesome event!  For more information, please visit our website at www.fotbabies.org.

Friends Spotlight

FOT Babies would like to welcome our newest staff person, Katie Ellis!

Katie joined our team at the first of the new year. She and her husband Justin have three beautiful children – Noah, Lily, and Silas. Katie is a registered nurse with a heart and passion for children with special needs. She is also the Mom of a child with special needs.
She is very creative and innovative, sparking and implementing new ideas, activities, and ways to reach out and forge relationships with our community. Her smile, sweetness, and energy are infectious. Her goal in life is to make everyone feel valued and special, maximizing their potential, and trying to provide the tools needed to make that happen. We welcome her to our Friends family!!!!

Making a Difference

"We received funds for Respite Care while I was undergoing cancer treatments.   Because of this, I was able to keep my great grandson in the only home he has ever known.  Thank you so much!"
"We have triplets and the only way we can take them all out is in a Triple Deluxe wagon.  We used the first one so much it wore out and broke.  We didn't have the extra money to replace it.  FOTB bought us a new one and it has been so helpful.  Thank you so much!"
"We received door alarms. Our 3 year old has non-verbal Autism Spectrum Disorder and doesn't understand danger. He has recently learned how to open doors. The alarms are so helpful because if Jaxon were to open the door, it would alert us with the alarm sound. If he were to get out alone, he would not be able to tell anyone his name, address, anything. That is so scary! We lost our younger son in March to a genetic disorder....he was 3 months old, so the thought of losing Jaxon too was a lot. By giving us these alarms, you gave us peace of mind and we sleep better at night now. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!"
