Dear Families,
We hope you had a great weekend . Please see below for some important information about how we are closing out the month of May at AFCHES:
END OF YEAR READING ASSESSMENTS
It is that time of year where we will be assessing your child(ren)’s reading growth. End of Year testing begins on Monday May 17. 2021 and end on Friday June 11, 2021. Your child’s teachers will communicate your child’s testing day and time. It will be very important that your child is in a quiet space to take this assessment. It will also be very important to make sure that your child takes the test without any help from anyone at home. We need to be able to assess their independent reading skills. Our goal is to have all scholars grow at last 1-2 levels from their last assessment (which took place in February).
How can you help your child before their assessment?
-
Ask them to read out loud to you.
-
Encourage them to use their Guided Reading goal(s) to problem solve words and comprehension.
-
Ask your child questions about the books they are reading at home and give them encouragement/celebrate them when you see them using their guided reading goals and strategies to get stronger in reading.
-
Encourage your child’s independence to problem solve at home. Independence and confidence is so important to reading growth.
ASYNCHRONOUS SCHOOL DAY ON MAY 28, 2021
On Friday, May 28, 2021, we will have an asynchronous school day so that teachers can spend that time conducting reading assessments. As we did in December and in February, scholars must sign in on time on Friday May 28th at 8:30AM sharp to take attendance and receive their assignments for the day. Scholars will then be asked to complete their independent work while teachers are testing. Asynchronous days allow for teachers to test as many students as possible and the hope is that students make growth!
FAMILY SURVEY ABOUT THE 21-22 SCHOOL YEAR - DUE MAY 28, 2021
On Friday May 14, 2021, you received a survey from the AF Network about your preference for in person learning or remote learning for the 21-22 school year. It is very important that 100% of our Crown Heights families complete the survey so that we can plan class sizes and class rosters for the new school year. Please be sure to check your email and Parent Square for the link to this brief survey. All surveys are due on May 28, 2021.
