Dear Families,

We hope you had a great weekend . Please see below for some important information about how we are closing out the month of May at AFCHES:

END OF YEAR READING ASSESSMENTS

It is that time of year where we will be assessing your child(ren)’s reading growth. End of Year testing begins on Monday May 17. 2021 and end on Friday June 11, 2021. Your child’s teachers will communicate your child’s testing day and time. It will be very important that your child is in a quiet space to take this assessment. It will also be very important to make sure that your child takes the test without any help from anyone at home. We need to be able to assess their independent reading skills. Our goal is to have all scholars grow at last 1-2 levels from their last assessment (which took place in February).

How can you help your child before their assessment?

  • Ask them to read out loud to you.

  • Encourage them to use their Guided Reading goal(s) to problem solve words and comprehension.

  • Ask your child questions about the books they are reading at home and give them encouragement/celebrate them when you see them using their guided reading goals and strategies to get stronger in reading.

  • Encourage your child’s independence to problem solve at home. Independence and confidence is so important to reading growth.

ASYNCHRONOUS SCHOOL DAY ON MAY 28, 2021

On Friday, May 28, 2021, we will have an asynchronous school day so that teachers can spend that time conducting reading assessments. As we did in December and in February, scholars must sign in on time on Friday May 28th at 8:30AM sharp to take attendance and receive their assignments for the day. Scholars will then be asked to complete their independent work while teachers are testing. Asynchronous days allow for teachers to test as many students as possible and the hope is that students make growth!

FAMILY SURVEY ABOUT THE 21-22 SCHOOL YEAR - DUE MAY 28, 2021

On Friday May 14, 2021, you received a survey from the AF Network about your preference for in person learning or remote learning for the 21-22 school year. It is very important that 100% of our Crown Heights families complete the survey so that we can plan class sizes and class rosters for the new school year. Please be sure to check your email and Parent Square for the link to this brief survey. All surveys are due on May 28, 2021.

 Remote Learning Tutoring Service

Brittany Jean, a former AF teacher, has started a remote learning tutoring service. For families interested in this type of support, please visit https://www.breadylearning.com/ to learn more.

<FYI> Free or Reduced Virtual Tutoring Options

Team Special Services has assembled this Virtual Tutoring Options resource outlining free or low-cost tutoring services available to our students that schools could share with scholars and families around Progress Report or Report Card nights. The list currently includes programs through Columbia University, Fordham University, and other credible programs. Please make this available for families or share specific tutoring organizations with your school communities as you see fit. The programs listed meet the following criteria that we believe can provide some support for scholars:
  • Free or low cost
  • Provides a consistent tutor
  • Provides a higher frequency of 2+ times a week for 1-2 hours
  • Provides one-on-one or small group tutoring
Achievement First is always in search of great teammates to join our community.  Through our referral program, we connect with hundreds of candidates every year. Recently, we launched an external referral program—this means that anyone can submit a referral and be eligible for a bonus, even if they aren’t employed by Achievement First. Do you know someone who you think would make a great teacher, leader, or operations teammate at one of our schools? Click here to submit a referral. If your referral is hired, you can earn a cash bonus. For complete rules, read here.

Scholar of the Week

Scholar's Name: Arianne Browne
Scholar's Grade: 2nd Grade
Scholar's Homeroom: Shirley Chisholm

The Scholar of the Week Award goes to Arianne Browne! With the entire 2020 to 2021 school year being remote, Arianne has consistently shown up in class and has been a star each and every day! Arianne embodies all of the values of our school and is a role model in our class. Arianne respects other students and the teachers- she shows reactions after listening to her peers and offers to build on with new ideas. She works hard to achieve all of the goals for the day-Arianne is very consistent with her work completion and she tries very hard, even when the work is challenging! Arianne makes it feel as though we are in the real classroom. She is motivated and owns her own learning. Keep it up, Ari!! We are so incredibly proud of you and know that you will continue to do amazing things in the future!
