Hi Families,

Last week was another difficult week in our country with police brutality and violence in our country. As a Black woman and a Black educator, I feel an immense amount of sadness as what is happening in our country makes me feel helpless and drained. I also know that our work at Crown Heights is incredibly important as we must continue to affirm our scholars while also giving them the tools they need to be the change that this country so desperately needs. As we continue to process the events of last week AND as you continue to support remote learning, I wanted to provide resources for you or anyone you may know in need of any support in dealing with our country’s trauma or our own level of stress. HERE is a link of resources including counseling resources. Please let us know if you are in need of any additional resources.

In addition, we are in the process of planning for the 21-22 school year, we know that families have a ton of questions about what next year will look like. Next month, we will have a family town hall where we will be going over the changes and ways we are making our school go from great to greater. I can wait to dive into this planning with you :)

With love,

Dr. Johnson

We are very excited to connect with you in the coming weeks as you and your child prepare to transition from 4th grade at Crown Heights Elementary School to 5th grade at Crown Heights Middle School.  My name is Jasmine Harris and I am the Lower School Dean of Students at Crown Heights Middle School. I will be working with, Levar Leys, the office Coordinator at CHMS, along with your trusted team at Crown Heights Elementary School to ensure that the transition to middle school is a positive, efficient and smooth experience.

 Remote Learning Tutoring Service

Brittany Jean, a former AF teacher, has started a remote learning tutoring service. For families interested in this type of support, please visit https://www.breadylearning.com/ to learn more.

<FYI> Free or Reduced Virtual Tutoring Options

Team Special Services has assembled this Virtual Tutoring Options resource outlining free or low-cost tutoring services available to our students that schools could share with scholars and families around Progress Report or Report Card nights. The list currently includes programs through Columbia University, Fordham University, and other credible programs. Please make this available for families or share specific tutoring organizations with your school communities as you see fit. The programs listed meet the following criteria that we believe can provide some support for scholars:
  • Free or low cost
  • Provides a consistent tutor
  • Provides a higher frequency of 2+ times a week for 1-2 hours
  • Provides one-on-one or small group tutoring
<FYI> 2021-2022 AF Enrollment Application is now OPEN

We urge you to share this amazing opportunity with your friends and family in need of a school community such as AF!
As a reminder, current AF scholars do not need to reapply to AF and enter the lottery again.

Whether you have incoming siblings that you would like to send to Achievement First or if you have family or friends interested in our schools, we encourage you to submit today to take advantage of upcoming virtual events and opportunities! To apply, simply click here, create an account or log into your SchoolMint account, and complete the application by April 1, 2021.

Achievement First is always in search of great teammates to join our community.  Through our referral program, we connect with hundreds of candidates every year. Recently, we launched an external referral program—this means that anyone can submit a referral and be eligible for a bonus, even if they aren’t employed by Achievement First. Do you know someone who you think would make a great teacher, leader, or operations teammate at one of our schools? Click here to submit a referral. If your referral is hired, you can earn a cash bonus. For complete rules, read here.
