This week, we celebrate our school leaders! I am extremely grateful for this team and could not do this work without them! Leading a school comes with its ups and downs, especially during a pandemic! Our school’s progress is because of the leaders of our school. Please join me in sharing gratitude to each one of the deans!

Ms. Gordon - Kindergarten Dean

With love, Dr. Johnson

Our tentative return back to in person learning (for the families who selected to go in person) will be on April 19th. This date will be confirmed by the Achievement First network by April 5, 2021. Remember, in order for our schools to open, the infection rate across Brooklyn must be below 5%. We will communicate as soon as the decision is made.

In order to get ready for the return day, we will have Asynchronous learning days on April 14th, April 15th, and April 16th. This means that scholars will sign in for attendance and to receive their daily assignments. The reason we will have asynchronous learning days is to have safety meetings with all staff to ensure we are clear on our school safety measures. We will also be reviewing the hybrid curriculum as it will slightly change from what we have been doing/using.

Please hold these dates unless Achievement First states we will not be opening. We will communicate all final decisions by April 5, 2021.

We are rapidly approaching our lottery day! We have seats available in Kindergarten and 1st grade! Please brag about our school to any friends and families and help us get to 100% in all grades!

AF Lottery - April 8th, 2021

This year's lottery will be help on April 8th, 2021. Families who have applied for their scholars to attend in the 2021-22 school year will receive an email and text from the Achievement First Network through SchoolMint. AFCHES will be calling families who were offered a seat on April 9th to welcome them to our school and provide follow-up information.

Dear 4th Grade Families:

We are very excited to connect with you in the coming weeks as you and your child prepare to transition from 4th grade at Crown Heights Elementary School to 5th grade at Crown Heights Middle School.  My name is Jasmine Harris and I am the Lower School Dean of Students at Crown Heights Middle School. I will be working with, Levar Leys, the office Coordinator at CHMS, along with your trusted team at Crown Heights Elementary School to ensure that the transition to middle school is a positive, efficient and smooth experience.

We know that you may have questions about enrollment process especially during these unprecedented times.  Over the next couple of weeks, you will be invited to a series of events that will prepare you and your child for the transition to our school.  All events will be virtual, and you will receive frequent reminders to attend.  We invite and encourage you to attend as many as you can. Here is what you can expect:

·         ~ 2 info sessions

·         ~ 6 orientation sessions

·         4th grade Virtual Tour

We look forward to meeting you soon.  If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact us with any questions to our emails.

Thank you,

Jasmine Harris

 Remote Learning Tutoring Service

Brittany Jean, a former AF teacher, has started a remote learning tutoring service. For families interested in this type of support, please visit to learn more.
<FYI> Free or Reduced Virtual Tutoring Options
Team Special Services has assembled this Virtual Tutoring Options resource outlining free or low-cost tutoring services available to our students that schools could share with scholars and families around Progress Report or Report Card nights. The list currently includes programs through Columbia University, Fordham University, and other credible programs. Please make this available for families or share specific tutoring organizations with your school communities as you see fit. The programs listed meet the following criteria that we believe can provide some support for scholars:
  • Free or low cost
  • Provides a consistent tutor
  • Provides a higher frequency of 2+ times a week for 1-2 hours
  • Provides one-on-one or small group tutoring
<FYI> 2021-2022 AF Enrollment Application is now OPEN

We urge you to share this amazing opportunity with your friends and family in need of a school community such as AF!
As a reminder, current AF scholars do not need to reapply to AF and enter the lottery again.

Whether you have incoming siblings that you would like to send to Achievement First or if you have family or friends interested in our schools, we encourage you to submit today to take advantage of upcoming virtual events and opportunities! To apply, simply click here, create an account or log into your SchoolMint account, and complete the application by April 1, 2021.
Achievement First is always in search of great teammates to join our community.  Through our referral program, we connect with hundreds of candidates every year. Recently, we launched an external referral program—this means that anyone can submit a referral and be eligible for a bonus, even if they aren’t employed by Achievement First. Do you know someone who you think would make a great teacher, leader, or operations teammate at one of our schools? Click here to submit a referral. If your referral is hired, you can earn a cash bonus. For complete rules, read here.

Scholar of the Week

Kayla Brooks
Kayla is the ultimate Nipsey-Hussler. She engages right away, all the way, all day, every day of the week. Whether the question to answer is quick or super-thick, she’s popping up in that chat right away. When she hops off mute to elaborate, we all benefit from her clear, concise, and calm insights. She listens and reads thoughtfully to the thoughts of teammates and is always one of the first to nod or respectfully disagree. If we’re lucky, we’ll even catch one of her perfect secret smiles at something we’ve said. She works HARD to up her game in every subject, every day. She communicates right away if there’s a tech or other kind of problem, and follows up on her own to ask for feedback, never waiting for us to come to her.
Kayla you are a star – constant and bright in our sky. Thank you for the light you shine!
