Hi Families,
We are just 8 weeks away from the end of the school year! In these last 8 weeks we need your help! We want to make sure that we finish in a strong way. We know this year has been difficult and many of our families have had to support with learning at home. We do not take that for granted at all. Now it’s time for the big finish! In these next 8 weeks we need our scholars to READ EVERY DAY! We will be assessing their reading level in 3 short weeks and it will be important for scholars to practice their reading goals daily. Please read with your children and ask them questions about the book(s). This is an excellent way to practice comprehension.
The second way to help is to remove ANY DISTRACTIONS from their view. One of the biggest distractions we are seeing is the television and/or toys. Students who are around it are more likely to pay attention to what is around them and not their schoolwork. It is natural for children to be distracted so let’s try our best to help to eliminate any distractions from their view. This time of year is critical as we are doing a ton of review and assessments. We all want them to do their best!
In addition to our strong finish to this school year, in the next few weeks we will give more information about the new school year and we are EXCITED to return back to the building! We will discuss our safety plan and send you information to choose your preference for the new school year. We know the new school year will be different and OUR PARTNERSHIP & STRONG COMMUNICATION will allow us to have a strong start to next year.
Thank you for all that you do families!
With love,
Dr. Johnson

Hi AFCHES Families!
(Message from Ms. Gilbert)
It has been an absolute pleasure serving you all, your kids, and the Crown Heights community for the last three school years. As of May, I will be leaving AFCHES and transitioning into a new role within AF. Thank you all so much for trusting me with your scholars daily and all the many great memories you all have provided me with. I am still a phone call/email away and look forward to hearing about all the amazing things your scholars accomplish- academically and beyond.
My name is Ms. Jenelle Bazil-Charles, and I will be your new Student Services Manager at AFCHES for 21-22 school year. I am so excited about working with you all and your scholars, I have already had the privilege of speaking with some of you during this transitioning stage. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. I am looking forward to soon closing out the school year with you all and starting SY 21-22.

<FYI> Free or Reduced Virtual Tutoring Options
Team Special Services has assembled this Virtual Tutoring Options resource outlining free or low-cost tutoring services available to our students that schools could share with scholars and families around Progress Report or Report Card nights. The list currently includes programs through Columbia University, Fordham University, and other credible programs. Please make this available for families or share specific tutoring organizations with your school communities as you see fit. The programs listed meet the following criteria that we believe can provide some support for scholars:
- Free or low cost
- Provides a consistent tutor
- Provides a higher frequency of 2+ times a week for 1-2 hours
- Provides one-on-one or small group tutoring

Scholar of the Week
Scholar's Name: Aedyn Thompson
Scholar's Grade: 1st Grade
Scholar's Homeroom: Nikki Giovanni
Nikki Giovanni would like to recognize Aedyn Thompson as the First Grade Scholar of the Week. From his exceptional work ethic to his motivated spirit, Aedyn definitely deserves that title! He comes into school every single day with the brightest smile, always ready to tackle our daily tasks. Not once has Aedyn ever said “This is too hard” or “I can’t do this”. Instead, he remains focused and tries his best, often encouraging his peers to do the same. You are such a leader to our team Aedyn. Congrats and keep up the amazing work!
Love,
Mrs. A and Ms. Gould
