“In my 25 years as a winemaker in our family vineyards, I have never seen a year like this. We have made some really remarkable wines.” Charles Symington
The quality of the 2017 vintage is exceptional and many comparisons have already been made to the legendary 1945s, one of the finest vintages of the last century. Both major houses, the Symington’s and Taylor Fladgate, have made declarations in 2017.
For the Symington Family 2017 marks the first ever back-to-back general declaration in their history. It is also their smallest declaration in the 21st century with yields about 30% down on the 2016 vintage.
The Taylor Fladgate Partnership actually made slightly more wine than in 2016. We are fortunate to be able to offer their latest creations in a variety of large formats.
David Fonseca Guimaraens, Head Winemaker at Taylor Fladgate, talked of studying the 1945 Harvest Report and “seeing an almost identical season to 2017. Let us hope the Ports from the 2017 harvest also follow the quality of those from 1945.”
