3rd Thursdays - Establish Your Routine

Over the past 6 weeks we have experienced a massive movement in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Welcome to 3rd Thursdays, a quick-read monthly newsletter for the 3rd Thursday of every month to make room for abundance.

Two days ago I published an article on LinkedIn (read here) titled Eleven Lessons.  I experienced these lessons 20 years ago along my journey through brain cancer and felt many of them are relevant through these unprecedented times.

Within recent weeks my observations from various forms of media, speaking with friends and family, is that the overall outlook is optimistic.  However many are restless and understandably itching to get back to normal.  

Today's lesson is "establish your routine" to adapt to your new normal.  

What I learned from being self-quarantined for 18 months through cancer is that the only thing we have control over is our thoughts and actions to move us forward.  We have control over minimizing risks and how we can make the most with our time in the present.

This is how I made the most with my time 20 years ago through cancer and how I make the most with my time today.  When in doubt, schedule it out.  

This is the framework of my weekday schedule. 



It's not always on point but it lends structure to my day and keeps me accountable.  This is important during times of isolation because an idle mind is a recipe for anxiety, depression, and cultivator of fear.  Been there, done that.

If you haven't done so already...
  • Create a spreadsheet to schedule every hour of your day.  If part of your routine is to do nothing, make time for that
  • Make a list of what's important for you and schedule time for it - create content, read, exercise, phone a friend, etc.
  • At the end of each day, write down a list of what needs attention tomorrow and unplug

Finally, describe the feeling when that task has been accomplished and the space you've created in your mind to allow for more abundance.  Find a reason to celebrate, even if it's a self affirmation, "Yep, I got this".
