"Everyone once in a while, it's important to reflect on our journeys to truly appreciate how far we've come."
- Yours Truly
Adversity is an opportunity to adapt, accept, and re-adjust to a new set of conditions. Society is navigating through turbulent waters with the pandemic, civil unrest, and the political climate.
Welcome to 3rd Thursdays, a quick-read monthly newsletter for the 3rd Thursday of every month to help make room for more abundance. While we may not be able to predict the weather and the conditions it creates we can always adjust our sails to the get us through times of uncertainty. We adjust our sails through our decisions and actions.
Last month, on July 20, 2020, I celebrated a HUGE personal milestone; my 20th year remission from brain cancer. Along the cancer journey remission is declared as NED (no evidence of disease).
Within a couple days notice I decided to reach out to a handful of friends to create a milestone moment to commemorate my 20 year remission date on July 20. It was a small gathering, easy to coordinate and be a part of.
A lot of major disruptions have transpired over the past 20 years that have forced us to reimagine and reinvent the way we choose to live our lives and forge our career paths...
2000 - Beginning of 2.5 year dot-com recession
2001 - 9/11 attack
2001 - Apple debuts iPod
2007 - Apple debuts iPhone
2008 - Housing crisis
2011, 2012 - LinkedIn and Facebook go public. The digital revolution ignites
2020 - Pandemic, civil unrest, election year
No doubt about it, each of these events created movements and moments in time. In the business world brands were forced to adapt and accept a new set of conditions.
Life milestones such as high school or college graduation, landing a dream job, a promotion, a layoff, a corporate departure, starting a family, starting a business, stricken with serious illness, overcoming serious illness, also create personal moments in time. They set us on new trajectories and/or become personal rites of passage.
My challenge for you on this 3rd Thursday is to make a list of milestone moments in your life, write down the year, how it became a defining moment, and what you learned. Create a spreadsheet and label each moment with the following questions...
When was it?
What shows up in your mind when you think about it?
What did you learn from it?
How can you share those lessons to help others?
Finally, describe the feeling when that task has been accomplished and the space you've created in your mind to allow for more abundance. Find a reason to celebrate, even if it's a self affirmation, "Yep, I got this".
Thank you for your time. Stay tuned for the next issue of 3rd Thursdays on Thursday, September 17, 2020. If you're diggin' the vibe check out this story I learned about Creating Abundancefrom Joshua Trees.
