20 years ago in March of 2000, the world was in a similar state as it is now. It was the beginning of the 2.5 year dot-com recession. Welcome to 3rd Thursdays, a quick-read monthly newsletter for the 3rd Thursday of every month.
March 2000 was also my 8th month of chemotherapy to treat a malignant brain tumor that was in my head. My immune system was compromised and my blood counts took longer to replenish after each round of treatment.
Ironically, I was oblivious to what was happening in the outside world. With 4 months of chemo remaining I remained on a short medical leash and had a lot of pent up energy.
There were alot of weeds in our backyard that were rooted in desert rock clay. It required a pick axe to loosen up the soil. I began excavating to uproot the weeds as if I was uprooting cancer from my body. Uprooting these weeds softened the soil and I began to dig holes. I got rid of what wasn't serving me, the weeds, and made room to grow something new, the holes.
I began to buy shrubs and trees to fill these holes to eventually blossom into things of beauty.
Fast forward 20 years to March 2020. We are living through another global crises similar to the AIDS crisis of the 80's, the dot-com burst of 2000, 9/11, the housing crisis, and now the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last week was rough with thousands of event cancellations, that millions of people depend on to sustain their families, businesses, and communities. Heck, two big community initiatives for my foundation were cancelled for April and now our biggest fundraising initiative in May could be compromised.
However, in the digital age we all have opportunities to make a difference for our communities, despite social distancing. We need to think differently and make the most with what we have.
Uproot the weeds that consume your mindshare and replace them with kindness, empathy, resourcefulness, and mindful action.
Finally, describe the feeling when that load has been lifted and the space you've created in your mind to allow more abundance. Find a reason to celebrate, even if it's a self affirmation, "Yep, I got this".
Thank you for your time. Stay tuned for the next issue of 3rd Thursdays on Thursday, April 16, 2020. If you're diggin' the vibe check out this link about Running Your Own Race.
