Soak in those rays, Friend!

June has the longest days of the year!

If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, then June 20th was the longest day of the year, and is referred to as the Summer Solstice.

As Simone M. Matthews (founder of UniversalLifeTools) writes, the “Solstice represents an opportunity to celebrate your LIGHT.

But, not only that, it’s also the perfect opportunity to tap into your masculine and feminine energies (June’s theme)! Just like the sun and the seasons, our energies go through cycles in which they ebb and flow.

Today we will discuss what our masculine and feminine energies are, why the Summer Solstice ignites their power and how you can tap into them with your own rituals.

What are our masculine and feminine energies?!

Remember last month, when we discussed sex and breath coming together in tantric practices? Well…

Tantra—an Eastern philosophy that believes the universe is created by and made up of masculine (Shiva) and feminine (Shakti) energies that infuse all things.”
               – Lena Schmidt, of the Chopra Center

Everyone has some of both energies, one often more dominant than the other. However, these energies don’t necessary have to correspond with someone’s sex nor gender identity.

Here are some characteristics of our feminine energy:

  • Receptive
  • Passive
  • Contractive
  • Intuitive
  • Inward

Here are some characteristics of our masculine energy:

  • Projective
  • Active
  • Giving
  • Expansive
  • Outward

(These characteristics inspired by NaimaRitter.com)

We might choose to summarize these as our actions (masculine) and our intentions (feminine).

Keep in mind that these are not true for all people and that YOU get to interpret what characterized your own masculine and feminine energies.

Why does the Summer Solstice ignite these energies?!

It is in finding a balance between these energies that we can find the most peace with our sexual selves and achieve greater overall wellbeing. The Summer Solstice is a moment when the universe’s masculine and feminine energies are in balance and, therefore, presenting the perfect opportunity for us to connect and balance our own.

This balance is because of "the dual energy of masculine and feminine that merges on the Solstice, with the Sun (Father) in the home of Cancer (Mother).”

How to create your own energy ritual:

If you’re looking to amplify your feminine energy to restore balance (perhaps you have been focusing on more action and less intention)...
  • Try to tap into your sacral chakra (the root of all feminine energy and power). You might do this by bringing your intention and breath to your pelvis or holding your lower abdomen throughout your preferred meditation practice.
  • It could be as simple as wearing orange–the color of your sacral chakra!
  • Slow down and bring intention and mindfulness to everything you do throughout the day. This takes incredible focus and determination, but you might reap significant reward.
  • Prioritize your own pleasure, whether that be eating a delicious meal, spending time with loved ones, masturbating, getting outdoors–whatever!
  • Spend time creating something. (ex: knitting, drawing, writing, choreographing a dance).
  • Spend time outside after sunset to soak in the moon’s feminine energy.

If you’re looking to amplify your masculine energy to restore balance…
  • Try checking something off your to-do list that you keep putting off. You’ll be amazed at how invigorating it feels.
  • Practice some movement-focused yoga or other fitness activity. (You may have heard of the tradition of hiking naked as a Solstice celebration).
  • Spend time outside during the day to soak in the Sun’s masculine energy.
  • Give a gift (preferably something you created yourself to bring in more balance of energies) to someone special.

You might also want to create your own, more traditional “ritual” to celebrate the Solstice. If that’s the case, consider incorporating a few of the following:
  • A reading (you can find many online) that acknowledges the symbolism of the Summer Solstice
  • Candles or fire to represent the sun’s energy
  • Dancing!

Writing prompt:

Think about all the characteristics that define who you are. Which do you think stem from your masculine energy? Which do you think stem from your feminine energy? Once you have that list, decide if these energies are out of balance or if there is something that could help you get them back into balance.

This voluntary monthly prompt invites you to explore your sexual biography.
Tips on exploring this: Set aside 20 minutes with your phone on silent and relax yourself in a comfortable space with a pen and paper. Go slow. Start with what comes to mind from your first read of the prompt. Continue writing your stream of consciousness.
