For more information, go to
The celebration of Imago Gallery’s 20th anniversary continues. This time the artist collective in Warren is going big with “The Big Show,” an open community exhibit of artists from the Sowams region and beyond. More than 103 artists and 232 artworks represent a wide array of media, styles, and subject matter. In addition to juried awards, Imago is recognizing the exceptional talent in the submissions, making this year’s community exhibition "truly capture the essence and diversity of the regional artistic community.” The arts are thriving in Sowams!

Happy Anniversary, Imago!

Tapping the Sugar Maples in Sowams

Shake off the winter doldrums and join the Community Maple Boil at Osamequin Farm in Seekonk. “It’s one of our favorite ways to spend time with friends in the cold months–gathered around the boil, breathing in the warm steam and watching the process unfold.,” says Farm Director, Sarah Newkirk. During Sundays in February and into early March, the participants bring the sap that they have gathered from their own trees to put into the farm’s evaporator to be boiled down along with the sap that is gathered at the farm. The final product, the exquisite golden syrup, will be shared among those individuals that contributed sap to the boil. Tapping maples has been part of the Sowams culture for millennia. Long before the Europeans settled here, the Pokanoket were sugaring in the season of the Maple Moon.

Barrington Land Conservation Trust has launched a new program designed to harness the energy and talents of the next generation of conservation leaders. Highschoolers on the Student Stewardship Team help preserve Barrington’s natural environment while earning community service hours.
Depending on the students’ interests, volunteer work may involve outdoor experiences like trail maintenance, planting, clean-ups and special projects. Students can also contribute their skills in film and photography, graphic design, writing and social media, or research. The Sowams Project is not just about preserving our past, but also preserving our future.

A Valuable Resource for Historic Collections

The Somerset Historical Society thanks Thomas Doyle of the Massachusetts Roving Archivist Program for visiting their museum to provide a strategic assessment and program review of their collection. This is a marvelous service for institutions with historic archives--- preservation societies, museums, town clerks, historical commissions, libraries and schools. Mr. Doyle assessed the condition of the Society’s collection and addressed the basic components of running an archive, including creating a collection development policy, processing collections, preservation, and disaster planning. His final report will include recommendations and a list of resources customized to the needs of the Somerset Historical Society. Big thanks to Chelsea Johnston, Assistant Director of the Carpenter Museum in Rehoboth, for hosting the Sowams Project Holiday party this year. Sowams was water-logged after the huge December torrent, but all the revelers were dry and warm in the Museum’s beautiful barn.
