June 2022

Dear Reader,

One adventure after another!

“Infectious disease is one of the few genuine adventures left in the world,” so said Hans Zinnser, one of the infectious disease giants from the early 20th century. Not only did he name a disease (Brill-Zinsser disease), but also isolate the organism (Rickettsia prowazekii) as well as make the vaccine and a textbook. He was also a medical war hero (WWI) and mentored John Enders (who went on to develop the measles vaccine).
And so, the adventures continue as we’ve witnessed in the last several weeks the emergence of two more infectious diseases.

Washington University Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences Receives $61 Million in Funding

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has received a $61 million grant from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support the infrastructure for developing and carrying out biomedical research studies. The funding supports Washington University’s Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS), which was established in 2007. The five-year grant renewal ensures that the ICTS will continue to serve as an engine of innovation in clinical and translational research across Missouri, with a focus on precision health, equity and diversity.

Implementing Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) in Translational Science

Left is a woman with a headband and a blue sweater. Right is a man with a blue shirt and a calendar in the background.
SDoH are the non-clinical covariates of how people live, grow, learn and age and relates to how people manage stressors or prevent worsening health outcomes. Data about patient-level SDoH are collected using clinical screening tools for social needs and social risk factors. CD2H led multiple SDoH synergistic initiatives relating to improvement of SDoH encoding and informing care and research in the CTSA community. The first was a pre-pandemic effort to create a maturity model for CTSAs to understand their current capacity to capture and use SDoH data. The pandemic extended the CD2H’s efforts to understand SDoH data and its use.
