Dear Reader,
Guest Blog from NCATS Director, Dr. Joni Rutter: Your Role in Building a Roadmap for the Future
This is my second guest appearance on Mike’s Blog, but my first time writing as the permanent director of NCATS. While my title is new, I am not new to NCATS or to this incredible community.
I joined NCATS in 2019 as deputy director, and I subsequently stepped in to serve as NCATS acting director, a role I held for the past year and a half. At the Fall 2022 CTSA Program Annual Meeting, I talked about my vision for NCATS and three audacious goals for the decade ahead. Now, in my capacity as NCATS director, I am committed to working with you to make this vision a reality.

Georgia CTSA Receives $73.7 Million to Accelerate Clinical and Translational Research Across Georgia
NCATS has awarded $58.6 million over five years to Georgia CTSA to continue its efforts to advance the quality of clinical and translational research and transform research results to impact health in Georgia and beyond. In addition to NIH funding, Georgia CTSA will receive $15.1 million in institutional support from its academic institutions.
"The renewal of the Georgia CTSA provides critical support for our institutional alliance as we work together to tackle the major health issues facing the citizens of Georgia,” says W. Robert Taylor, MD, PhD, contact principal investigator at Emory University. “We will continue our focus on reducing the tragic health disparities that exist across our state."

A Stronger Dose of Community Engagement
Research from University of Minnesota’s Robert Straka, PharmD, FCCP, found significant differences in how efficiently medications are metabolized by members of Minnesota's Hmong community compared to other populations, suggesting that the Hmong may be better served with different dosages or even different medications. He sought to validate these findings in another Hmong community, which he successfully did with the help of pharmacy student and CTSI Advanced Pathways to Research Program (A-PReP) scholar Tou Thao.
