Announcing New Equity Committee

New Equity Committee formed to find ways to help BIPOC(Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) business owners.

Police brutality and social injustice in the midst of a global pandemic have brought the conversation of social inequities to the forefront of every conversation. We know that environmental issues disproportionally affect BIPOC communities or communities with a higher population of minority groups. Sustainability does not just mean protecting the environment, it also means providing healthier communities for the residents that live in them. There is no environmental justice if we don't first address social justice.

We want the Green Economy to be inclusive by investing additional resources to expand our reach and provide additional support for businesses owned by BIPOC and/or historically marginalized populations, and for the underrepresented communities they may belong to. We will do this by:

  • Building long term meaningful relationships with community-based organizations while amplifying existing resources in these communities.
  • Defining & tracking business ownership to make sure our network better aligns with our state’s demographics. CA population as of 2018.
  • Increasing participation, access to funding, and services for sustainability and resource conservation programs.
  • Identifying and directing funding toward programs and businesses that increase equity in the delivery of Green Business Program services.
  • Approaching learning and education around equity with curiosity and humility by assessing the barriers that businesses are facing, identifying their needs, and understanding how we can best serve them.
  • Celebrating the culture & uniqueness of Green Businesses.

If you haven't already answered our Green Business Survey, please do so in the corresponding link: certified business OR in-process of certifying, the purpose of it is to gather demographic information of Green Business owners that will better inform our future programs targeted at expanding the reach of our program.

New Sector Checklists

In the field learning about ag. sustainability for a new sector checklist.

CAGBN is currently developing four new sector checklists that will allow us to serve more businesses! Do you know anyone that owns a business in one of these new sectors? Let them know we want to recognize them and help them reach their sustainability goals. They could be the first to pilot these checklists:

  • Laboratory Checklist
  • Greek Life Checklist
  • Agricultural Checklist

We have also created a new "Remote Office" checklist for businesses that are planning to have staff continue work from home for the foreseeable future.

Find out more information about the sector checklists by contacting your local Program Director.

Welcome Innovators!

Monterey Bay Kayaks
Congratulations to Monterey Bay Kayaks, an Innovator level business in the Monterey Green Business Program, for taking sustainability to the next level! This business has the highest standards in the Monterey Bay for wildlife viewing and has also helped in creating laws that hold true to their values of respecting wildlife. Their business diverts an estimated 55 gallons of trash from entering the ocean each week from their beach cleanups. MB Kayaks also help make wildlife education accessible by offering lower than at cost tours to local schools and for lower-income individuals/families.

Hacienda Homeowners Association
Congratulations to Hacienda Homeowners Association for its recent innovator certification, they have been an Alameda County Green Business for over 10 years! Their comprehensive commute alternatives program regularly receives national recognition. They offer their employees and residents a range of commuter benefits to significantly reduces single-occupant vehicle use: including ECOpass which offers free rides to local Wheels bus, free carpool or vanpool match list, walking, and bicycling support services, and a free Guaranteed Ride Home for people who use a commute alternative. Improvements have also been made to deliver recycled water to approximately two-thirds of the development’s landscaping and reduced its water use with drought-tolerant landscaping.

The Innovator Tier allows businesses to go beyond certification to gain additional recognition and benefits. Contact your local program director to find out more about this level of certification!
