THE CENTER FOR
TEACHING EXCELLENCE

I hope this newsletter finds you settled into some kind of rhythm or structure to your semester. I think we have all been craving some sort of routine or predictability to our days.  One thing we do know is that things are going to be different this year.  As I step into this new role I have realized that the circumstances that we are experiencing have brought on a new opportunity to examine how the CTE operates. And more importantly, it is a chance to develop a strategic plan that will help guide the work of the CTE to support faculty while we all strive to pursue the mission of the College.

One of my top priorities is to make sure the CTE is accessible and relevant to all faculty.  That includes not only full time faculty but also those adjuncts extending from Kent City to Caledonia and Grand Rapids to the lakeshore. We have many people out in our Middle Colleges and delivering concurrent and dual-enrollment opportunities.  Our delivery modes have expanded as well.  Being responsive to community needs means that we often have to work rapidly and it’s important to make sure our faculty are supported along the way.

As we embark upon the development of a strategic plan for the CTE, I will rely on the Advisory Board and important insight from faculty and other stakeholders.  Please consider taking a few minutes to give us your thoughts.  Best wishes for a safe and successful semester.

SUMMER TEACHING INSTITUTE

It has been a very busy time leading up to the start of the semester. For those of you who were not able to participate in the Summer Teaching Institute, some of the sessions were recorded.  Watch the keynote address on Blended Learning featuring Dr. Norman D. Vaughan, Professor of Education at Mt. Royal University in Calgary, Alberta,

Other sessions were recorded and can be found on the CTE website.

Over the next several months the CTE is going to be working to develop a comprehensive and easily accessible library of past and current opportunities. In the meantime, we hope to spotlight many of the great resources that currently exist.

Equity-mindedness Approaches to Teaching using
Open Educational Resources” (OERs)

*REGISTRATION OPENS SOON*

The Center for Teaching Excellence in collaboration with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the Library and Learning Commons has partnered to provide (mini) workshops on “Equity-mindedness Approaches to Teaching using Open Educational Resources” (OERs).  In response to two surveys, nearly 5,000 GRCC students reported on the impact of the pandemic. A reduction or loss of income and the ability to afford course materials were listed among the top challenges. This OER mini-workshop series is designed to be relevant to the economic realities of our students and responsive to establishing practices that enhance equitable learning outcomes.
