We're barreling towards the end of the school year, but it's not the end of the PTA year (yet). There are several exciting learning opportunities this month and next for PTA members, students, and parents as well as blog posts on timely topics like PTA-sponsored end of year celebrations and the annual Historian Report. Learn more about our newest PTA Resolution in our interview with the maker, a California State PTA Student Board Member and get information for parents on how to read and understand statewide test scores. Celebrate the accomplishments of other PTAs in California and share your input in our survey. We have three statewide virtual events this month as well: Join us this afternoon at 4 pm to learn how families throughout California can access the internet at home for free or at a reduced cost with Comcast. Next week everyone is invited to a discussion on California's budget and the impact of the May Revise on local schools and students with our guest speaker Kevin Gordon. Also next week, don't miss the chance to learn more about anxiety and teen mental health in our film screening of Angst and then join the discussion to explore anxiety; its causes, effects, and what we can do about it.

Follow us on social media or reach out to let us know what questions you have.

Tips to Celebrate Student Success: Graduations, Promotions and Proms

Each year, PTAs are asked to sponsor various graduation and celebration events in May and June: promotions, grad nights, dances, and more.

Our goal is to help you take the right steps to fulfill those responsibilities and stage a successful event. California State PTA has developed a guide on our website where you’ll find a wealth of tools for safe and successful event planning including how to handle donations and ways to ensure everyone is welcome. Continue reading on our blog to access tips to make your end-of-the-school-year celebration a great event for everyone!

New Resolution Gives Equitable Access with Plant-based Meals

The delegates to the 2022 California State PTA Convention adopted a new resolution titled: Plant-Based Food Options at School Meals. This resolution will help all California State PTA members advocate for school breakfast and lunch programs that provide balanced, nutritious meals, and promote equity for all children and youth. Its primary author, California State PTA Student Board Member Maya Bhandari, tells us:

“I believe California schools have a responsibility to equitably provide healthy meals to all children. This PTA resolution demonstrates that providing plant-based meal options improves children’s health and our environmental footprint while reducing costs.”

Our state Resolutions Committee Chair, Beth Graves Meyerhoff interviewed Bhandari to learn more about what inspired her to submit the resolution. Head over to the blog for the interview

How to Incorporate Your Historian’s Work Into Your PTA  All Year

In the bylaws of many PTA/PTSA Units, Councils, and Districts the historian is identified as an elected officer. Even though this person has a seat at the table year-round, many PTA members don’t know what the Historian does other than collecting volunteer hours. A PTA historian captures, assembles, and preserves the PTA record of activities and achievements, collects and reports volunteer hours, and displays or presents a brief overview of the PTA year at a meeting near the end of the school year.

Click here for the blog post and the information you need to complete your local report now; plus suggestions of how your Historian can partner with other PTA/PTSA leaders and support the work of your organization.

Understanding Annual Statewide Test Scores

Sponsored by ETS
Beginning in June, parents should be on the look-out for their child’s Student Score Report on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). The California Department of Education in partnership with the state’s assessment developer, ETS, provides a variety of resources to help parents/caregivers understand their child’s performance on the statewide assessment. While test scores provide a common yardstick to measure student progress, it is important to remember that they provide only one measure of performance and should be considered along with the rest of a child’s learning experience.

Read more on our blog to learn how to interpret state assessment test results, find resources to support a child’s academic progress and access tools students can use to stay engaged and continue to progress academically.
