Hi PTA friends,

As we approach the end of the school year, I wanted to share several PTA events happening in May. I hope that you find this list of updates and meetings helpful. I also hope you’ll be able to join us for one of our monthly calls (all PTA members are welcome).

May updates and information:

  • May is National Mental Health Month and our website has extensive information about this important issue, plus resources you can share with your community.

  • On May 25, from 7:00-8:30p.m., join us for a special CA State PTA screening of Angst, followed by a Q & A session with experts. Angst is a film-based mental health support program we are presenting in collaboration with the California Department of Education.

  • Does your PTA want to say thank you to teachers? The first week of May is Teacher Appreciation week and May 11 is California’s Day of the Teacher, but it’s never too late to find items in the PTA Store that celebrate the “T” in PTA. Be sure to check out the National PTA “Teaching is a Work of Heart” kit to encourage students and families to express their thanks.

  • Join California State PTA in supporting the federal Child Tax Credit expansion. Take Action to help reduce the number of children living in poverty by more than 40 percent nationally.

  • We are also thrilled to bring you a webinar from PTA sponsor Comcast. This special event, on May 18, 4:00-5:00p.m., will explain a new federal Access Connectivity Program that supports no-cost, low-cost Wi-Fi for low-income families. If you’re a new PTA leader eager to help your local families, this webinar is for you!

  • We are currently seeking student leaders to serve on our state board for the 2022-23 PTA year. Student Board Members are full voting members, they share their perspectives on current issues, voice their concerns and provide insights during meetings. Additional information and the application (due May 15th) can be found on our website.

  • Watch for interesting articles and important reminders in the May issue of PTA Connects, and in other posts on our blog, including Family Engagement Friday.

Each month, California State PTA also presents a variety of opportunities for you to interact and engage with other PTA members through the state. Join one (or more) of our monthly zoom calls just for California State PTA members:

  • Join the Screen Side Chat (May 9 at 6pm & 10 at noon) — Laura Mudge, Vice President for Education will be joining me. We’ll be talking about school funding, the local school district budgeting process that includes the LCAP, answer your questions and help with whatever you need. Maybe we’ll have some good news on the state budget — details on the website.

  • Bring any and all questions about running your PTA to the Monthly Leadership Call (May 19 at 6pm) — for an interactive chat with members of the state's Leadership Services Commission. This month’s topic is “Newly Elected: Incoming Planning, Roles and Responsibilities”.

  • On the Monthly Communications Call (May 19 at 7pm) join the state’s Communication Commission and other PTA members throughout the state for a member idea exchange focused on getting ready to go back to school. Visit the website for more information, social media kits and to register.

  • Join a special Legislation Call (May 24 at 7pm). Guest speaker Kevin Gordon will update us all on the Governor’s recommendations for the 2022-23 state budget after the May Revise and how that could affect local schools.

I hope many of you were able to attend our recent state convention — watch for a recap soon. In the meantime, add our calls to your May calendar and join us in the conversations or listen in! You can also check the calendar on our website for future events. Thank you for all you do for California's children and families. Feel free to share this message with your PTA and your community — all PTA members are welcome to participate.

I look forward to chatting with you soon!
