School Funding Issues Taking Center Stage for PTA Legislation Team

Each January in California, a new legislative year kicks off with the governor submitting a proposed state budget. This year, the Governor’s Budget proposal recommends a big increase in funding for public schools. That’s good news for California’s children and applauded by California State PTA , but not because of surprising largesse from Governor Gavin Newsom. It reflects the mechanisms of California’s school funding system, as explained in this recent article from Ed100. Further, the governor’s proposal leaves room for improvement. 

On January 24, 2022, over 100 people joined the California State PTA Legislation Team virtually to get more details. School finance expert Kevin Gordon, president and a co-founding partner of the Capitol Advisors Group, described Governor Newsom’s budget proposal. Getting involved in your school’s PTA should be open to everyone and give a feeling of being welcome and inclusive. It shouldn’t bring back memories of cliques, popu­lar kids, or feeling left out. Why Teaching Media Literacy Is Optional in California Schools

There is a law requiring the California Department of Education to identify and share resources on media literacy. However, there is no requirement that schools use them or directly teach media literacy skills. State leaders in California do not track local instruction in media literacy so there is no single source for assessing what is happening in local school districts.
