"Ceremonies are important. But our gratitude has to be more than visits to the troops, and once-a-year Memorial Day ceremonies. We honor the dead best by treating the living well.” -  Jennifer Granholm

Jennifer Mulhern Granholm is a Canadian-American politician, lawyer, educator, author, and political commentator serving as the 16th United States Secretary of Energy. A member of the Democratic Party, she was the 47th governor of Michigan from 2003 to 2011. Wikipedia

Values, Social Issues, and Public Policy

Join us as we begin an exploration of the interaction of individual and shared values, social problems, and public policy.  How do these impact each other? How do we determine public policies, at which level of government, and by whom?  We intend this examination and discussion to last for several months. Board member Paul Goebel will be our host.

LWV-Wake is offering a "Timely Topics" webinar next month titled "Environmental Injustice: Why Should We Care" on June 16th at 5:00pm.

This webinar is open to the public. The webinar will discuss how the negative effects of pollution and environmental degradation particularly impact low-income communities and communities of color. We have two guest speakers---a Leland town council member from Brunswick County and an environmental scientist from the NC Department of Environmental Quality.

In America today, it can feel difficult to bridge our divides. We might feel tempted to give up or not even try. But this puts America on a shaky path, as we increasingly demean, demonize, and dehumanize each other. Political gridlock and dysfunction, as well as societal and cultural rifts, are only deepening.

America Talks is a powerful event that invites Americans to connect one-on-one, face-to-face on video across our political divides. By doing so, we remind ourselves that the "other" is – just like us – a person with family, friends, hopes, fears, values, beliefs, and intrinsic worth.

These conversations will take place the weekend of June 12th (10 am PT / 1 pm ET) and 13th (10 AM PT/ 1 pm ET). Take one hour and join this conversation. We know that one simple conversation, even if multiplied thousands of times, won't transform our country. But it's a start.

Join this powerful event and speak directly with other Americans seeking to repair divides, restore connection, and find common cause.
