LWVHC UPDATES

May 2, 2021

“Our democracy is dependent on people who passionately cherish the ideals of a democracy. Every man is created equal with an inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It's a wonderful idea, and it takes people who cherish that idea to be actively involved in the process.”  - George Takei

George Takei is an American actor, author, and activist. He is best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the USS Enterprise in the television series Star Trek. He also portrayed the character in six Star Trek feature films and one episode of Star Trek: Voyager. Wikipedia

Nursing Homes and Long Term Care
May 12 - 2 pm

As North Carolina's population ages, more people and their families confront a confusing array of long-term care choices and payment sources with little or no preparation. Speakers for this program will give an overview of options, provide resources to better prepare for decisions, and offer their thoughts on emerging concerns.  Speakers are: Bill Lamb, president of the Board of Directors of FOR (Friend of Residents in Long Term Care), a statewide advocacy group committed to improving the quality of life for residents living in long term care settings; and Don Streb, Chairman of Henderson County's Community Advisory Committee, the local branch of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, which regularly visits Adult Care Homes, Nursing Homes, and Family Care Facilities.

The program covered the basics of how to take action to urge our state and federal legislatures to support laws that encourage participation in our democratic process. Time is short to let our state legislators know how we feel about a fair and open redistricting process. So commit today to contacting a legislator, and ask a friend or relative to do the same.
