The Blue Ridge Literacy Council has given Caren Kessler, our Voter Services chair, its Founder’s Award for 2020.  It is the first year this award has been given.  The award is in honor of Caren’s work in starting the Literacy Council some 40 years ago!  There was an ad in the Hendersonville Lightning on December 30 naming the award recipients for the year. A Zoom event later in January will honor Caren and the other awardees.

As we approach Martin Luther King Day and the inauguration of a new president, let us use the powerful words of MLK to inspire us. Use this link  to review eleven MLK speeches.

This topic will be led by LWVHC President, Rachel Poller.

Please explore these writings and come prepared to discuss. What makes these speeches so powerful? How have these words affected our lives? What implications do you see for the future of civil rights and our democracy?
