Capture the Flag
LWVHC and DemocracyNC hosted a screening of “Capture the Flag” on Sunday, July 22nd at Sanctuary Brewing.  Following the documentary which focused on the 2016 election, voter suppression, and the efforts to protect voting rights in NC, attendees received some preliminary information on the 6 “for/against” amendments that will be on the ballot for NC voters this fall.
August Launch Party

We began our new year with a gathering at the Hendersonville Community Co-op. Board member, Kathy Trice provided instruction and materials for members and guests to "Rock the Vote" by painting a rock.  Our Co-Presidents, Rachel and Nan, gave us a summary of what programs and events to look for in the coming months, and we enjoyed apple pie and ice cream.
Apple Festival
Our volunteers registered voters and provided general LWV and ERA information to the many thousands of Festival Attendees.  Voter Services Team Chair, Caren, did a phenomenal job of organizing and staffing the booth so that visitors were not only well-informed but also energized by the enthusiasm of our volunteers and our mission.
Apple Festival Parade
We marched to celebrate 99 years of advocacy, increase awareness of, and bring visibility to NC’s ratification of ERA.
Candidate Meet and Greet

On September 13th the League hosted a Meet and Greet with candidates for various elected positions at the City Operations Building in Hendersonville. LWVHC  invited all candidates running for  positions as the Representatives for District 11 in the US House of Representatives, State candidates for NC Senate District 48 and NC House Districts 113 and 117, District Attorney, judicial positions (NC Supreme Court and NC Court of Appeals), County Commissioners, County Clerk of Superior Court, County Register of Deeds, County Sheriff, County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor, and School Board.  Many candidates attended and engaged with the numerous attendees who explored a variety of issues.
Candidate Forum
On September 25th, LWVHC hosted a candidate forum at the City Operations Building in Hendersonville for the candidates for the NC House and Senate, and all 6 candidates attended.  Retired Hendersonville High School teacher, Walt Cottingham moderated and asked nonpartisan questions that were based on topics generated by the LWVNC.  The questions were carefully crafted by a small group of local League members and reviewed by a nonpartisan, non-LWV community leader.  While there wasn’t time to ask and answer all of the questions, candidates provided thoughtful, frank, and provocative answers and rebuttals to those which were asked, and the 150 attendees appreciated the opportunity to witness a civil yet heated political dialogue.
