The mission of the LWV is “Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.”  But what do we mean by democracy, and how do we best defend it?  Are there essential characteristics to make democracy possible in a polity, and if so, what are they?  Join us for what may be the first of a number of conversations about democracy.
Please do some independent research and reflecting, and come prepared to learn and talk about democracy and its fundamental elements.  LWVHC board member and resident historian/retired history teacher, Paul Goebel, will lead our discussion.
If you haven’t attended an Alice Group session yet, please join us. We’re a friendly group—some love to talk and some to listen—so hope to see you!

 Join us on:

February 11, 3:00 - 4:30 pm via Zoom

Support the For the People Act
The For the People Act (HR 1) is a once-in-a-generation package of proven reforms that would:
  • Expand and protect voting rights and access to the ballot
  • Put ordinary Americans ahead of Big Money donors
  • End gerrymandering so that electoral districts are fairly drawn
  • Clean up government and hold elected officials to the highest ethical standards.

In March 2019 the For the People Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives with unanimous support from the Democratic caucus, and is supported by every Democrat in the Senate; yet the former Senate Majority Leader refused to bring it up for a vote.
The League of Women Voters supports this important legislation. Go here to read more about it and to sign a petition, sponsored by LWVUS and other organizations, asking President Joe Biden and the U.S. Congress to take action on it as soon as possible!

LWV Wake County Redistricting Team has invited us to join in their book discussion of David Daley's Ratf**ked: The True Story Behind the Secret Plan to Steal America’s Democracy.  The event is Feb. 24 at 5pm. For more info and to register, click HERE.
